    Tourist notes

Some time ago, while surfing the World Wide Web, I stumbled upon an article in Wikipedia "Donetsk province". The article was accompanied by a map of territorial changes in the 1920s. And suddenly something reminded me of certain outlines - how often I have seen similar outlines lately. What are these outlines? Yes, this is the "line of contact" with the Armed Forces of Ukraine!

I wondered how it happened, where is the catch. I climbed to read a little deeper, and in the end I made a certain scheme based on the available ones. The scheme is very arbitrary and awkward, but it can give some ideas.

As you know, the border of the Yekaterinoslav province and the Don Cossack Region by 1914 passed along the Kalmius River, within the boundaries of present-day Donetsk. The left-bank part of present-day Donetsk belonged to the Don Cossack Region, and the right bank belonged to the Yekaterinoslav province.

Another historical fact is also of interest. We quote Wikipedia: The village of Koshary (Antratsytovsky district, Luhansk region) until 1920 was part of the Don Cossack region, when ... it was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR. In 1924, part of Donbass was returned to the RSFSR and, although all adjacent territories remained within Ukraine, the village of Koshary and the village of Darino-Ermakovka returned to the RSFSR, becoming Russian enclaves within the Luhansk district of Ukraine. In 1945, this enclave, which is part of the Krasnosulinsky district of the Rostov region, was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR. As a result of the offensive ... control over this territory passed ... to the Lugansk People's Republic.

    So, the scheme:

    The diagram shows:
1 - the territory of the city of Mariupol.
2 - territory of the city of Donetsk.
3 - enclave of the RSFSR within the Ukrainian SSR from 1924 to 1945.
4 - the current territory of the Donetsk region, controlled by Ukraine.
    5 - Lugansk region.
6 - the former territory of the Luhansk region, now controlled by the LPR, in the past part of the Yekaterinoslav province (Novorossiya).
7 - the former territory of the Donetsk region, now controlled by the DPR, in the past part of the Yekaterinoslav province (Novorossia).
8 - the former territory of the Donetsk region, now controlled by the DPR, in the past part of the Don Army Region.
9 - the former territory of the Luhansk region, now controlled by the LPR, in the past part of the Don Army Region.
10 - territory transferred from the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR in 1920 and returned back in 1924. Includes the cities of Taganrog and Shakhty with districts. Now the territory of the Rostov region of Russia.
11 - the territory of the Don region of the RSFSR, transferred to the Ukrainian SSR in 1920. Now the "northern" part of this territory is controlled by Ukraine, and the "southern" LPR.
    Black mark - contact line.

The scheme was compiled on the basis of a map from the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, scaled superimposed on the border reshaping scheme from the Wikipedia article "Donetsk province".

Interesting conclusions can be drawn from all this. The current territories of the DPR and LPR include the former territories of the RSFSR and even the historical Novorossia! Do not forget also that the USSR was officially formed only in 1922, and in 1920 there was Soviet power in these places, but ... We can safely say that even at least some legality and logic of the transfer of Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR in 1954 is here and does not smell. Borders were cut to the right and left. However, this was not of particular importance, because there was only one country.

It seems to me that a similar scheme was used by those in power in the current well-known conflict. Curiously, this scheme unwittingly gives answers to many questions. Almost everything, if you imagine from a certain angle, seems logical.
We changed Donetsk to Mariupol. Nobody is going to cut these cities in half now. If you look at the map of the Yekaterinoslav province, you can see that Mariupol is actually located on the border. And the border passed along Kalmius, which flows through modern Mariupol, as well as through Donetsk.
The territory of the Don region was divided in half.
Introduced parts of historical Novorossia into both republics. This was done, of course, not for historical reasons, but nevertheless.
For some reason, it turned out that the largest former pieces of the RSFSR remained in the DPR and LPR.

Based on this scheme, Russia has every right to annex this territory, on the same basis as Crimea.

    These are the conclusions.
