• What can be cooked from squid: quick and tasty

Just Cause 3 is the third installment of a tropical open-world shooter featuring a Rico the acrobat with a hook and a submachine gun.

What is the effect of the graphics settings in the game, and which of them can be lowered so that the game works well even on low-power hardware?

Minimum system requirements for Just Cause 3

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD Phenom II X6 1075T.

    RAM: 8 GB.

Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 2 GB or AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 GB.

The minimum requirements in 2017 usually imply a comfortable game at high settings in a resolution of no higher than 1280 × 720, and if you want Full HD (1920 × 1080), then many beauties will have to be turned off or reduced. If your PC does not meet these requirements, then the game can cause serious overheating of the video card.

Recommended system requirements for Just Cause 3

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770 or AMD FX-8350.

    RAM: 8 GB.

Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 3 GB or AMD Radeon R9 290 4 GB.

Owners of gaming computers with a configuration close to the recommended requirements shouldn't be too relaxed either. By no means always on such "machines" there are absolutely no drawdowns below 60 frames in especially dynamic moments or complex scenes.

Setting the graphics for Just Cause 3

    Anisotropic Level Filtering

    low (1-2 FPS).

Anisotropic filtering returns clarity to textures that are located on surfaces at an acute angle to the player's field of view. Without filtering, such textures look blurry - this is the overhead of displaying a 3D image on a flat screen. In reality, a similar effect can be observed if you close one eye and carefully look at the familiar surrounding space - all surfaces at an angle will slightly lose their clarity (for a full perception of the volume of the world need both eyes).

As for the recommended settings for this parameter, here you can set the maximum value (16x) in most cases - only a couple of frames will be lost. However, the difference between 4x and 16x at resolutions no higher than Full HD (1920 × 1080) is barely noticeable. Therefore, if every FPS unit is dear to you, then you can put a fourfold filtering.

    Anti-Aliasing

Impact on performance: FXAA - low (1-2 FPS), SMAA - low (2-3 FPS), SMAA T2x - medium (4-5 FPS).

While we all have not yet managed to finally move into the era of 4K or Ultra HD (3840 × 2160), jagged “ladders” of pixels remain distinguishable at the edges of three-dimensional objects in games. A parameter such as "Antialiasing" (or "Antialiasing") is responsible for just the same smoothing these very "ladders" so that the picture as a whole becomes more pleasing to the eye.

In Just Cause 3, you can fight the jagged edges of coconut trees, various stone buildings, swarthy characters, fast boats and other tropical joys using three types of "anti-aliasing artillery", three anti-aliasing technologies: FXAA, SMAA and SMAA T2x. The first is the cheapest (1-2 FPS), but it makes the textures a little duller (even those that are not angled). The second and third are pretty much the same, but SMAA T2x is more effective - it does a better job of anti-aliasing when the player's character moves quickly. Therefore, the SMAA T2x is a little more "voracious" than the standard SMAA (4-5 FPS versus 2-3).

    Depth of Field

Impact on performance: low (3-4 FPS).

The cinematic effect “Depth of Field” covers the distant part of the surrounding space with a slightly blurry and covered with a slight “haze”, while objects located at an arm's length from the observer leaves, on the contrary, clear. This is often used during staged scenes in games, and also allows you to hide the simplified detail of objects in the distance.

In Just Cause 3, the inclusion of "Depth of Field" is almost imperceptible to the naked eye, in staged scenes it is absolutely always used (regardless of the settings), and even takes quite a few frames - as many as four. So we recommend that everyone, except for the owners of top-end "cars", turn off this option.

    Edge Fade

    Impact on performance: absent.

"Darkening the edges" in another way is also called "Vignetting". And the first name speaks for itself - the edges of the image are slightly darkened, which makes it slightly more contrasting and like a movie.

This setting does not affect performance in any way, so you can safely turn on "Darken edges" if you like this effect.

    Global Illumination

Impact on performance: high (14-17 FPS)

Another parameter that makes the image more realistic and pleasing. Global Illumination simulates the reflection of light on adjacent surfaces. Without it, only those surfaces are illuminated, on which the rays of the original light sources (the Sun, Moon, lanterns, etc.) fall.

Unfortunately, "Global Illumination" spends as much as 17 frames on its "whims", so many will have to sacrifice additional beauty for a smoother gameplay.

    Draw distance (LOD Factor)

Impact on performance: average (2-9 frames).

Another setting with a self-explanatory name. "Draw range" is responsible for the visibility of elements of the surrounding space at medium and long distances. The higher the value is set, the more objects are drawn away from the player's character.

In Just Cause 3, the picture becomes noticeably worse only when the value is set to “Low”. If you put "Medium", then only a couple of FPS units will be lost, and on "Very high" - all nine. So the “Average” value should be suitable for the majority.

    Screen Space Reflections

Impact on performance: high (10-20 FPS).

Any any glossy surface can reflect the surrounding world. In games, to achieve this effect, you must use special technology, since initially all three-dimensional objects do not reflect anything. Screen Space Reflections simulate reflections on glossy surfaces, making Just Cause 3's sunny world even more beautiful.

In a game, this option usually consumes about 10 frames per second, but in especially saturated with explosions and action scenes, drawdowns can reach all 20. Therefore, on weak PCs, this beauty will have to be sacrificed.

    Shadow Quality

Impact on performance: average (1-7 FPS).

"Shadow quality", as you might guess, determines the resolution and detail of the shadows. In any three-dimensional game at all times it was the shadows that were one of the most "gluttonous" graphic effects. And the more realistic they become from blockbuster to blockbuster, the higher their appetites grow.

However, in Just Cause 3, even at the maximum value of the parameter, the game slows down by no more than 7 frames. Therefore, only those who play on low-power systems should set the value below "High".

    SSAO

Impact on performance: average (7-8 FPS).

SSAO darkens various corners and grooves in surfaces. All this gives the picture more depth and contrast. It also allows nearby objects to cast shadows on top of each other.

SSAO consumes quite a lot - about 8 frames, but also on appearance images are affected seriously. Therefore, it is recommended to turn it off only on computers closer to the minimum power requirements.

    Texture Quality

Impact on performance: low (1-2 FPS).

Video memory consumption: up to 3.5 GB.

Although "texture quality" takes up part of the video memory, it does not affect the smoothness of the gameplay. And on a video card with less than two gigabytes of RAM, you still can't really play in Just Cause 3, so there is no big sense in manually configuring this option for a long time.

And since you're forced to choose anyway, set it to High if your graphics card has no more than two gigabytes of video memory, or Very High if you have at least four.

    Water Detail and Water Tesselation

Impact on performance: high (3-16 FPS).

Both of these parameters are responsible for the quality of the water display. The first one - for the detail, variety and size of waves, and the second - for additional special effects like beautiful foam.

In most cases, here everything can be set to the very or almost the very maximum, since the number of surrounding objects on the water is minimal and the number of frames is initially high.

The company has published the official system requirements on the game page on Steam. As it became known to the site, they turned out to be slightly higher than the list of requirements that leaked to the network shortly before the announcement.

In particular, the differences lie in the graphics cards. If the leaked photo lists the minimum requirements for an Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 GPU, the official list lists the GeForce 670. The official recommended requirements list for the graphics card is GeForce GTX 780, a more powerful model compared to the GTX 760, which was listed in the leak.

At the same time, players, apparently, will need a slightly more powerful processor - at least an Intel Core i5-2500K with a frequency of 3.3 GHz or an AMD Phenom II X6 1075T with a frequency of 3 GHz. The rest of the requirements remained unchanged.

    Minimum system requirements:

    • Processor: Intel Core i5-2500K @ 3.3 GHz or AMD Phenom II X6 1075T @ 3 GHz
    • RAM: 6 GB

Actually, this is quite enough, because the main thing in this game is by no means the story, but a huge open world in which you can do whatever you want, destroy absolutely all buildings in the most unthinkable way and arrange a real orgy of fire and explosions. Players will have at their disposal a tropical island and water expanses of about 1000 km 2.

Recall that the project is published by Square Enix on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. World premiere date - December 1st.
