Conventional single-level ceilings today you will hardly surprise anyone. Due to the abundance of options for woven and film panels, consumers are fed up with traditional ceiling design options. But stretch ceiling backlit is still popular, because it has many advantages and provides unlimited scope for the designer's imagination. We will tell you what options for backlit stretch ceiling structures exist, how the installation takes place, what tools, materials and components are used.

Options for the location of the backlight on a stretch ceiling

There are several options for installing the backlight when installing stretch ceilings:

illumination from the inside.

Photos of stretch ceilings with lighting around the perimeter are most often found on the Web. This is the simplest lighting option. A single-level tension structure is mounted in the room, and the lighting is laid behind the ceiling plinth, which is attached around the perimeter of the room at a short distance (5-7 cm) from the ceiling surface. With this installation method, the height to which the ceiling is lowered is insignificant, therefore this option is suitable for low rooms.

The lighting under the stretch ceiling is located in a two-level or multi-level structure. In this case, the first tier, in which the backlight is mounted, can also be made of a stretch panel or drywall. In the plasterboard structure, a special shelf is made in the lower tier on which LEDs are laid. This way of installing the backlight provides the largest number of ceiling design options. Thanks to the lighting, the ceiling surface appears higher and the room is more spacious.

Illumination of the stretch ceiling from the inside is possible only if translucent panels are installed. In this case, the LED strip is attached to the base ceiling. It can be mounted so that a certain pattern or pattern is formed on the surface. After that, the tape is connected to the transformer and the tensioning sheet is installed.

Important! The illuminated stretch ceiling inside has one drawback - in order to get to the tape in order to repair or replace it, you will have to dismantle the stretch panel.

Stretch ceiling device with perimeter lighting

We will consider in detail how to install a stretch ceiling with LED lighting around the perimeter. This installation option is the most popular due to the ease of installation, and also due to the fact that the whole structure does not steal many precious centimeters of the room height, which is important for our low-rise apartments.

Separately, it is worth considering how much the stretch ceiling drops during installation. As a rule, this number depends on the type of tension panel and the presence or absence of built-in lighting fixtures... The lowering height of the stretch ceiling will be minimal (2-3 cm) if fabric stretch coverings are used. The film strip is mounted from the base surface at a distance of at least 5-7 cm. In the presence of built-in lamps, the distance to which the coverage is lowered is equal to the height of the base of the device plus 1 centimeter.

LED lighting accessories

For installation LED backlight you will need the following components:

LED single-color or multi-color strip(the first type is easier to install and costs less, but gives lighting of one specific color);
mounting profile it is needed to cool the tape, which emits a small amount of heat during operation (it can be closed and open);
the power supply is selected according to the parameters of the tape;
An RGB controller is needed only for multi-color tapes (the device allows you to set the lighting parameters and select the glow color remotely thanks to the supplied control panel).

The option with installing a multi-color tape is much more profitable, because you can change the color of the lighting to suit your mood. You can use different color combinations and create a special atmosphere in the room.

The metal profile plays the role of a cooling radiator. Closed profiles have a special cover. It is transparent and acts as a diffuser and a lens at the same time. When choosing a power supply, make sure that its power is one third more than the power of the LED strip. This will allow the device to work without overloads, in a gentle mode, which will significantly extend the service life.

Stretch ceiling accessories

The main components that are needed for the installation of the stretch cover are wall or ceiling moldings. These are fastening profiles with a snap, in which the fabric or film is fixed. Profiles are made of aluminum and plastic. The former are usually used in conjunction with woven panels, because dense structural fabric adheres better to slippery metal than PVC film. Film products are mounted in plastic baguettes.

In addition to baguettes, you will need decorative inserts that close the gap between the stretch ceiling and the wall, which is formed due to the visible part of the fastening profile. There are universal inserts that match the color of the coating, and decorative plugs that come with the mounting profile.

Important! If it is planned to install built-in lighting devices, then you will need thermal protection rings for the stretch ceiling. They are glued to the coating at the place where the luminaire is installed and protect the canvas from heating.

Backlit ceiling mounting technology

Do not try to install the stretch ceiling yourself. This requires experience and special tools. So, the installation of the film coating is carried out after preliminary heating of the coating with a heat gun.

Types and installation of a profile for a ceiling with illumination

According to the locking mechanism, the fastening profiles are divided into wedge, clip and harpoon. The latter are suitable for the installation of PVC coatings. To do this, a special seal, called a harpoon, is welded along the perimeter of the canvas at the factory. Woven coverings are more often attached to baguettes with a wedge (glazing) lock. Clip-on locks are used less often, because they differ in unreliable fixation of the canvas.

First, we determine the amount by which the tension cover is lowered. After that, the resulting distance is set aside from the lowest corner in the room. Using a laser or water level, transfer the mark to other corners in the room. We connect the resulting marks with lines on the walls.

According to the markings, we attach the wall baguette to the walls. For fixing we use self-tapping screws with dowels. The step of installing fasteners in plastic baguettes is 10-15 cm. Aluminum profiles are more durable, so screws can be screwed in in increments of 20-30 cm.

Stretch ceiling installation

The installation method of the stretch cover depends on the type of material. Fabric ceilings mounted in the following sequence:

The cloth is cut on the spot according to the dimensions of the room. Be sure to make allowances around the perimeter within 15-20 cm. They are needed to tension the panel, because the installation takes place without heating.
After installing the baguettes, the fabric is tucked into the groove of the fastening profile, first along one wall, and then along the opposite wall of the room. In this case, work begins to be carried out from the central part of the room, moving towards the corners. When filling the second edge of the web, the coating is slightly pulled over the allowance sticking out of the baguette.
Then two other edges of the panel are inserted into the fastening profile.
After installing the entire coating, the perimeter allowances are cut off with a clerical knife. A decorative insert is installed.

Installation of the film coating is as follows:

After installing wall moldings the panel is suspended in the corners of the room on special clamps.
The material is heated with a heat gun to a temperature of 70 degrees. After that, the elasticity of the material increases, and it stretches well.
Using a spatula with rounded ends, the canvas is tucked into the baguette. To do this, grab a harpoon welded along the edge of the coating with a spatula and insert it into the baguette lock until it clicks. Work is carried out from the corners of the room, gradually moving towards the center.
After refueling all edges decorative plugs are installed.

Installation of LED strip

Usually LED strips are sold in 5 meter lengths. If the perimeter of the room is larger, then pieces of tape are soldered in parallel. A connector is soldered to the product, which goes to the controller.

From the back of the product, remove the protective paper and glue the LED to the walls just below the stretch ceiling. After that, we fix the ceiling plinths at a distance of 5 cm from the stretch cover. You can perform the installation a little differently - first, glue the foam ceiling plinths to the walls with liquid nails, retreating the required distance from the stretch ceiling, and then lay the LED strip in the groove behind them.

LED strips can be cut to the desired length. The cutting points are marked with a special dotted line. Do not use belts that are too long. A 15 m long product is enough for one power supply. If you have a very large lighting area, buy a separate power supply for an additional 15-meter strip.

Important! Very long LED strips consume a lot of electricity and quickly reach their end of life.

If you stick the LED on a curved section, do not bend the product too much. Bending with a radius greater than 20 mm can damage the diodes. Observe the polarity rule when connecting. The diodes are connected to electricity only after the controller is connected.

The LED-backlit stretch ceiling, to me personally, is incredibly strongly reminiscent of the Lights of Saint Elmo, which have been filling sailors with mystical delight for more than one hundred years. And I am especially pleased with the possibility of realizing such beauty right at home. And how to do this, I will tell you further.

Types of illumination carried out

Incandescent bulbs and even fluorescent lighting fixtures disappear right away if you want to achieve the most magical effect, although they can be placed around the perimeter if desired.

I advise you to focus on LEDs and LED strips, depending on what type of placement of light sources you choose from the following:

Contour... In this case, as you might guess from the name, the light sources are placed along the perimeter of the ceiling, which, of course, LED strips can handle ideally.

But here, too, there may be some nuances:

You can place lighting fixtures on the shelf, pointing upwards, and as a result get solid light bars;

Or you can install them on a slope, directing them along the ceiling, as a result of which rays emanating from the walls are formed;

Point... Here you will need exactly the LEDs, and not the tapes consisting of them, and, most likely, you will have to solder. You can also use spots for stretch ceilings. The point is that the light sources are no longer placed around the perimeter, but over the entire area. ceiling covering, as a result of which it may appear starry sky or even some other luminous one.

Color... You should definitely buy a full-color RGB tape and a controller for it right away. To implement the flashing function, use only dedicated controllers. The fact is that it causes a strong psychedelic effect, for example, frequencies such as 0.5 Hz, 2 Hz and 7 Hz coincide with brain rhythms and can provoke an epileptic seizure.

Density of LEDs... On the market, you can find tapes that contain 30, 60 or 120 light emitting elements per meter of their length. Depending on whether you want to make diffuse or directional lighting, you should use the following options:

In this case, it is not at all necessary to choose in favor of only one version of the implemented contour illumination. You can easily install the light sources both on the slopes and on the bottom of the niches, and then use the controller to change them or even turn on both at the same time, which will create your own original lighting effect.

Power... On the LED strip, you can find a marking consisting of three SMD letters and four numbers that follow them. So the first two digits determine the power parameter, that is, the product on which this value is greater is more powerful. And, of course, the exact characteristics are included in the accompanying document. The selection is better done like this:

If you install lighting elements with a power of 7 and 14 W in a niche, and on a slope of 5 and 7 W, you can save on the controller by buying a cheaper model without dimming, and simplify setting the desired color gamut.

Power of the entire system... Everything is simple here: we look at the perimeter of the room in which the installation will be carried out according to the plan, or measure it with a tape measure, after which we multiply by the power indicator of one meter of tape and get the desired value;
Controller power and power supply are selected in accordance with the indicator found above.

Shelf design

The most reliable and aesthetic option for placing an LED strip is a drywall shelf.

The instructions for making it look like this:

At the lowest corner of the room measure the distance from the ceiling at least 150 mm;
According to the marked mark beat off with a paint cord line along the perimeter of the entire room;

Along the resulting markup install guide profiles fixing them with self-tapping screws with dowels;

On the ceiling, stepping back from the walls 150-200 mm, with a step of 400-600 mm in the same way, first applying the markings, also install guide profiles;

In the place where the stretch ceiling will be installed, we mount a metal mortgage, since the pull-off force in this place will be about 60 kg per meter;

The distance between the plasterboard curb and the ceiling must be at least 110 mm, so that there is enough space to install the stretch ceiling.

We glue the cracks between the gypsum board with a serpyanka and putty, after which we paint the finished box and the protruding shelf with acrylic;
Now at the location of the mortgage the stretch ceiling profile is mounted, and then it is installed itself. It is better to entrust this to specialists, the main thing is that you have everything ready for placing the backlight.

If you already have a stretch ceiling installed, then you can go a simpler way: attach a fillet protruding forward a few centimeters along the perimeter, and lay the backlight above it. But this is less beautiful and practical, so it's better to think over and implement everything in advance according to the scenario described above.

Installation of the backlight itself

The diagram shows how LED strips are installed with both types of backlighting. And, as I already advised above, it is better to edit both options.

In the process, adhere to the following recommendations and rules:

Soldering wires to tapes should be done with extreme caution., as they can be damaged in case of overheating. Flux paste, POS-61 solder and a temperature of +160 degrees are best suited for this task. And try to solder with one point touching a soldering iron;

If you doubt your abilities, then it is better to entrust the soldering iron to the master, since burned LEDs can eventually cost more than paying for his services.

Connect every three meters of tape to the controller... If you make sections of greater length, then they may not withstand the current load;
Necessarily respect the polarity of the connecting terminals as shown in the following diagram:

Cut with sharp scissors or wire cutters. strictly according to the markings on the tapes;
The gluing itself is not difficult at all, but there is still some trick here: at the installation site pre-attach PVC strips... The fact is that with GCR the adhesion of the adhesive on the back of the LED strips is not very reliable, but with PVC it is just perfect.

And, by the way, you can additionally integrate into the boxes, for example, spotlights, which will expand your possibilities of playing with room lighting.

Features of the spotlight device

On the one hand, there is more soldering here, on the other hand, the preliminary installation of the drywall box is optional. Therefore, it is difficult to say unequivocally that this method is more difficult than the one described above. Everyone will determine this for himself.

The technology implies work first to fix the lighting, and only then to install the tension web.

Advice! When choosing decor options, please note that the interior lighting can be changed or repaired only when the entire canvas is dismantled. This is not always beneficial.

Stretch ceiling device with perimeter lighting

The popularity of the method is explained by the ease of installation and the minimum reduction in ceiling height. To calculate the possible loss of space, you need to know how much the stretch ceiling drops during installation:

when using fabric canvases, the loss of height is 2-3 cm;
when using PVC film - 5-7 cm;
in the presence of projections and lighting fixtures, the losses will be the width of the base base of the luminaire plus another 1 cm or the height of the projection.

Therefore, in order to minimize loss of height, it is better to remove the luminaires, if possible, remove the protrusions. This is not difficult, especially if the structures are made of sheet material and cover engineering communications, etc. As a rule, in houses with low ceilings, the pipelines are raised close to the base of the ceiling, and for beauty they are sewn up with boxes. These boxes should be dismantled - it will appear more space for maneuver, and the communication system will be closed with a tension sheet.

LED lighting accessories

The main thing that you need to pay attention to when equipping a stretch ceiling with lighting around the perimeter is baguettes. Profiles are made from:

Aluminum. They are used for mounting fabrics, as they are more durable and not prone to teething. The high density of the woven fabric guarantees a reinforced hold in slippery baguettes.

Work begins by determining the height of the stretch ceiling. Now find the lowest corner in the room, set aside the desired height, mark. Transfer the markings in all corners, using a laser level for this. Once the height is determined, the markings can be connected into a line, you can use a ruler, or you can beat it off with a paint cord.

The resulting line will be the boundary of the installation height of the wall molding, along which the element should be attached to screws and dowels. The step of fasteners in plastic elements is 10-15 cm, in aluminum elements 20-30 cm.

Installation of LED strip

The lighting is arranged under a stretch ceiling or inside it from a tape 5 m long. If the length is insufficient, two pieces are soldered. Also, you need to solder the connector to the LEDs, directed to the controller.

Then the work algorithm is as follows:

from the back side, remove the paper tape that protects the LEDs;
glue the product to the wall panels with the calculation of the height slightly below the stretch panel;
fix the ceiling plinth, retreating 50 mm from the canvas.

This is a simple option, but the installation may be different: put a foam ceiling plinth on liquid nails with an indent from the canvas or film, and then lay the LED strip in the groove behind the plinths.

Stretch ceiling installation

Having decided on the type of material, the main stage of work is performed. If these are fabric canvases:

free the floors around the entire perimeter of the room;
roll out the material;
cut the required amount of fabric, observing an allowance of 15-20 cm around the entire perimeter - allowances are needed for an even stretch;
fill the canvas into the installed baguettes;
start from the center along the longest wall of the room, then move to another long wall;
after the canvas is stretched along short walls;
the corners are tucked in last;
the second edge of the canvas (along parallel walls) is tucked in with a stretch, the material needs to be slightly pulled up by the edge that hangs from the baguette, or rather, by the allowance.

Now it remains only to cut off the allowances, decorate the mounting opening with a flexible insert and you're done.

Algorithm for tensioning the film web:

Free the room from furniture, start up the heat gun and warm up the air to +60 .. + 70 C. Temperature regime supported throughout the entire period of work.
Once the wall moldings have been installed, stretching can begin. The work is carried out from the corners, with a gradual advance towards the center.
The free edges of the film are attached to temporary hangers. This is important to maintain the integrity of the film.
It is extremely important to work with gloves - the heated film quickly becomes stained, so protective measures are needed. And it will be useful to have preliminary wet cleaning of the room.
You need to fill the film into the baguette with a spatula with rounded edges. It is necessary to check the tool for burrs, notches, so as not to tear the heated film. The fastening is as follows: grab the harpoon with a spatula, which is welded along the edge of the coating, insert it into the baguette lock so that you hear a click.

As soon as the entire film is stretched, decorative plugs, flexible tape are installed. The construction is ready. Some sagging of the film is normal, after cooling, the material will acquire the desired shape, it will stretch tightly and evenly, but only if the height of the fastening of the profiles is calculated correctly with the proper evenness.

When choosing options for installing lighting from the inside, from the outside, it should be remembered that too long tapes require a lot of energy and fail faster. It is easier to cut one element into several small ones, the reference point is the dotted line, which all systems are supplemented with.

Advice! One power source supplies energy to a tape up to 15 m without problems. If the area of the room is large, then you need to buy two devices. If the second segment is shorter, it is better to divide the entire length of the tape into two, connecting segments of the same length to the power supplies.

When arranging curved structures, it is impossible to bend the tape strongly, a bending radius of more than 20 mm will lead to a defect in the diodes, they will not burn. When connecting, observe the polarity, but testing of the lighting system is carried out after the controller is connected.

Tape with an adhesive backing side better adheres to the degreased surface. If there is no adhesive layer, double-sided tape is suitable, the tape is laid on the metal on an insulating substrate - this will prevent possible defects in the lighting.

The cost of a stretch ceiling with lighting around the perimeter

When contacting a company, you will have to take into account all the nuances of the work: the purchase of materials, consumables, installation.
