• What can be cooked from squid: quick and tasty

    In Italy there is a long-standing custom under New Year throw away old furniture from the windows. In our country, as a rule, obsolete things gather dust in closets or attics. But if you show your imagination and put a little effort, old furniture will find not only a second life, saving money, but also give a unique style to your home.

    And if you add here the fashion to surround yourself with antiques, in which the furniture makers not only put the experience of generations, but also their soul, filigree, with great artistic taste finishing every detail, then there is only one thing left - to try to return the old table, chest of drawers or wardrobe to its former splendor.

    So, we have before us brilliant opportunities for independent restoration of old furniture. However, before you embark on this simple, but rather laborious process, check out our tips that will not only save the thing from slow death, but also make it a highlight of your interior.

    Stages of repair and restoration: nine easy steps "from" and "to"

    If you decide to implement complete renovation furniture and update or add decoration elements, then you should start work in stages.

    1. The value of the furniture should be analyzed. To do this, study all the tags and stamps that indicate the time, place of its creation, possibly - to the master. If it turns out that the furniture is valuable, it is better to consult with professionals, so as not to accidentally nullify all the value. For example, removing trim from collectible antique furniture can reduce its value.
    2. Before starting the restoration, the furniture must be thoroughly cleaned. It is more convenient to do this with a sponge with soapy water, you can use a toothbrush to clean small parts, clean the gaps with a toothpick. The accessories are first removed, you can give it shine with toothpaste. Remove stubborn deposits with very thin (no. 0000) emery paper.

    1. Each piece is disassembled into parts during restoration. Leave only glued furniture frames unassembled.
    2. The next process is underway scraping, with the help of which old varnish, paint, dirt are removed. It is necessary to perform the scraping very carefully, because veneering of surfaces was often used in old furniture, so the main thing here is not to damage the old veneer. If the parts are carved, you can use special washes.
    3. The most difficult part is the reconstruction of the lost pieces of furniture. New parts must be an exact copy of the lost ones. The selected wood should not only be well dried, but the same color, tone and pattern as the original.
    4. The assembly of the restored parts is carried out dry, without glue. This helps determine if everything is in place. And only then the parts are glued together, if necessary, strengthening the supporting structure.
    5. Toning is an important process, because the color of the tree depends on appearance piece of furniture.
    6. The coating of old furniture with varnish is usually carried out with a brush, as did the craftsmen in the old days, which betrays a certain aesthetic sophistication to the object being restored.
    7. During restoration upholstered furniture one more stage is needed - its upholstery. It is better to choose the material for the upholstery identical to the one that was originally on the furniture. First, you should start by recreating the seat - fasten the springs, tighten the jute ribbons, stuff with horsehair. After that, the fabric is upholstered.

    Restoration tools - a standard set of any restorer

    If you decide to engage in restoration, then the necessary tools for this business should be prepared in advance. You can buy them at your regular hardware store. And here is a list of what you will surely like:

    • mixed grit sandpaper
    • plastic and metal spatulas
    • scraper for furniture
    • steel sponge
    • liquid gel that removes varnish coatings
    • varnish and paint
    • screwdriver
    • rubber mallet and hammer to knock or knock out parts without damaging the wood
    • set of clamps
    • wood glue
    • wood putty
    • pencil, tape measure, square and ruler
    • vegetable oil soap
    • gloves
    • respirator
    • corner brushes (5–8 cm)
    • toothbrush, toothpicks, needle or string

    Painting with paints is the easiest restoration option

    Significant changes to the old furniture during the restoration are given by painting with paints. Using this technique, you can turn an ordinary stool into a glamorous chair, and the kitchen table into a field strewn with flowers. If you have already decided on the color scheme and pattern, you need to learn about the painting technology and the possibilities provided by different kinds paints.

    Painting technology for old furniture:

    • Stage 1 - degreasing, for which a light soda solution is used;
    • then sanding is carried out to remove roughness;
    • deep scratches and dents putty;
    • the next stage is a primer;
    • the final stage is paint application.

    After drying, the product begins to apply the pattern. It can be applied immediately, but it is better to use a pre-prepared template or stencil - they will allow you to apply the same type of drawings.

    Acrylic paints are often used for painting on wood, but they are not suitable for polished surfaces. Car paints in spray cans are convenient to use.

    Craquelure - the web of antiquity

    Currently, home decoration with antiques is considered fashionable. But what if there are no antiques, but they can give such a necessary touch to the interior. To solve this problem, they use the method of artificial aging of things - craquelure, which in French means "crack".

    Craquelure effect

    Choose a warm, well-ventilated area to speed up the drying process of the craquelure. First, you need to do wet cleaning so that flying dust particles do not settle on the varnish.

    The simplest in execution is a single-phase craquelure, which allows you to obtain a monochromatic surface with contrasting cracks. To complete it, you will need a one-component varnish and the following steps:

    1. Clean and prime the surface of the object to be decorated. For quick drying, you can use a hairdryer.
    2. For the color of the cracks, apply acrylic paint and let it dry completely.
    3. Apply the varnish quickly, evenly, without gaps and then dry it until it is still sticky, but no longer sticks to the fingers.
    4. Then quickly apply the base paint, which will crack after a few minutes.
    5. Fix the resulting color with a finishing varnish.
    Craquelure vases

    These five steps will help you create a unique piece that fits perfectly into your decor.

    It is applied after complete drying of the base, covered with paint in a contrasting color. Cracks in the varnish begin to appear almost immediately, so varnishing must be done quickly. The drying process of the product is 35-40 minutes.

    Decanter craquelure

    Two-component varnish

    The first layer of varnish is applied very thinly and dries for half an hour. Then the surface is covered with a second layer. If you want deep cracks, then the layer should be thicker. The cracking process takes several days and you can use a hairdryer to speed it up. After complete drying, the grooves are rubbed with the necessary grouting: oil paint, gold powder, crushed pastel, etc. You can use a dishwashing sponge to do this. Then the excess grout is removed and the product is wiped with a cloth soaked in vegetable oil... The resulting texture can be fixed with a special fixative or transparent varnish, after wiping it dry.

    Veneering is a favorite technique of old masters

    Veneering is the process of gluing a thin plywood plate of expensive wood-based material (veneer) to a cheaper wood-based panel surface.

    When restoring furniture by veneering, we can solve two problems.

    1. Gain in price. It is possible to "make" an oak table from a pine table, while the external differences will be very insignificant.
    2. Design possibilities. You can make an Art Nouveau thing out of a tattered outdated thing.

    There are several types of veneer, but the most affordable at home is hot, in which the veneer is glued to the base with an adhesive. For it you will need:

    • veneered base
    • plywood knife
    • paper
    • wooden block for grouting
    • sandpaper

    Veneering

    1. To remove the old veneer, other coating, the product is placed on a horizontal surface. Dismantling is carried out carefully and slowly. If the product is upholstered with decorative fabric or something else, has glass inserts, then all this must be removed. Then the old veneer or paint layers are removed. To remove old paint you can use a building hair dryer or special washes.
    2. The veneered base must be perfectly flat, so we putty or seal the flaws with sedenticon glue. As everything dries, we clean it with sandpaper.
    3. We moisten the veneer with a damp sponge and put it under a press. To absorb excess moisture on both sides of the veneer, place wrapping paper between it and the plywood.
    4. We pay special attention to the size of the pieces of the harvested veneer: they should slightly protrude beyond the edges of the base (at the end, the excess can be cut off). A plywood knife is used to cut the veneer.
    5. Prepared pieces of veneer are treated with special glue, which is allowed to dry for 10 minutes.
    6. Then the veneer is applied to the surface of the product and ironed through a clean sheet with an iron, at a temperature not exceeding 50 degrees, otherwise the iron can burn holes in the thin wood material.

    In principle, this is what the whole veneering process consists of.

    Soviet furniture often has enough good quality to serve their masters for years. You can only throw it away because the interior has become old-fashioned or tired. Many items are made of natural wood, and could continue to function for a long time, but this design! Tweak the look of your grandma's dresser or mom's wall for something really cool.

    There are several effective tricks that will completely change the appearance of the Soviet headset and allow it to last longer. Choose one or all of them.

    Repair and preparation for rework

    If the table or chest of drawers you inherited was not particularly popular, its design can be left unchanged. After all, it will not necessarily be furniture that has set the teeth on edge, and in combination with modern furnishings it will be quite appropriate to look. But without renovation works it will hardly be possible to manage. Over time, the furniture dries up, and some parts will have to be re-fitted to each other.

    Be sure to pay attention to the following operations:

    • Cleaning furniture from dirt, dust and soot (pay special attention to the corners);
    • preventive lubrication of locks;
    • fitting of parts (if the furniture is dry or warped during transportation);
    • grinding and puttying of damaged surfaces;
    • change of furniture fittings

    In some cases, restoration of damaged surfaces and thorough repairs will be sufficient. If you decide to completely change the appearance specific subject, this stage will be preparatory.

    Repairing damaged coatings or applying new varnish

    The least radical way of alteration, which borders on restoration. You can update the damaged coating a little, or completely change the look of the furniture. It all depends on the type of varnish and processing methods.

    It is most appropriate to use it in cases when furniture made of good types of wood gets under restoration. A classic design that will be appropriate in any interior needs delicacy.

    Some helpful tips:

    • The easiest way is to use an oil-based varnish, it was with it that old furniture was processed. In some cases, you can do without removing the old layers.
    • Apply the varnish with a sponge, not a brush, to prevent the formation of streaks and lint on the surface.
    • Dry each layer for at least 12 hours.
    • If you want to completely change the look of your furniture, use a two-component craquelure varnish. It will create a cracking effect on the surface, and will make the furniture look like an antique.

    Some pieces of furniture should not be overhauled. It is enough to restore the old layer of varnish and restore the fittings a little.

    Craquelure varnish goes well with painting, decorative painting and decoupage.

    Painting old furniture

    Choose this technique if you're looking to completely redesign your design. Be that as it may, but natural wood furniture can look a little bulky and heavy. And if for a spacious office this can be a plus, then in a small apartment you want lightness and air. Repainting will help to make the design more democratic.

    Some helpful tips:

    • Use this type of rework and where the wood is badly damaged, or it comes about inexpensive wood species.
    • Be sure to remove the old coating from the surface.
    • Sand the wood well, then apply putty and a coat of primer. This will significantly reduce paint consumption and achieve better results.
    • After applying the first coat of paint, dry the furniture and go over it with a sander and sandpaper. This process may seem ineffective, since a significant part of the paint will be removed. But with re-painting, you will achieve the perfect result.
    • It is easier to work with matte paints, they better hide surface defects.
    • Use art painting or ready-made templates to create interesting designs.
    • Combine painted details with natural wood.

    Light shades and laconic fittings will make the furniture more democratic.

    White color and weightless hardware completely transformed the old chest of drawers.

    Monochromatic paint that hides the texture of the wood looks light and modern.

    In some cases, a light background in combination with contrasting hardware works great.

    It is good to apply bright accents with masking tape.

    As a stencil for applying paint, you can use an old curtain with an ornament.

    Another version of the "lace" painting.

    Master the decoupage technique

    This type of finish has long been adopted by needlewomen. But why not apply it on a larger scale? Use ready-made images and apply them to a painted or sanded surface.

    Some helpful tips:

    • Be sure to prime the surface before sticking images on it.
    • As a material, use any drawings printed on thin paper, napkins, or even newspaper clippings.
    • Before gluing, thick paper must be soaked in water or decoupage solution;
    • Do not limit yourself to surface treatment with glue. After the decoupage coating has dried, cover the furniture with a durable varnish.

    Decoupage works great in combination with matte paint.

    A large drawing can be printed on thin paper.

    We hope we managed to inspire you to update your interior. Invent, create and have fun with what you have done.

    1. Author's decoupage

    Renovation of a furniture facade using decoupage technique is one of the favorite techniques of designer-decorator Anastasia Kasparyan. What do you need? Photo or painting printed on a color inkjet printer, special glue, masking tape, hair dryer and brushes.

    What to do? Place the printed image with its front side on furniture facade, grease thickly with transformer glue, smooth with a roller and dry with a hairdryer. Let it dry, then moisten it abundantly with water, remove the paper. Fix the resulting image with varnish. Voila, the new furniture facade is ready!

    2. Painting with a cross

    To give old furniture a new creative look, you can not only fix and paint it, but also paint it. Even if you are far from an artist, there is an easy way to create a real masterpiece on a furniture facade! Anastasia Kasparyan shares the secret again.

    What to do? Remember the good old cross stitch? The principle is the same here. We lined the surface, find the drawing you like, and transfer it to the facade using colored paints. It turns out unusual and stylish!

    3. Industrial lacing

    One more unusual way furniture renovation - creating a decorative pattern using nails and ropes. “Such modernization will look spectacular in a loft interior or a brutal men's room,” says Anastasia Kasparyan.

    What to do? Nail nails along the perimeter of the selected image, drawn in advance on the furniture, and connect them in series using a tourniquet. It turns out very unusual.

    4. Soft spot

    Everyone's familiar way of decorating old furniture is its upholstery. But Anastasia Kasparyan offers another unusual way of renovation. To create such a charming pouf, we need a stiff mesh base and woolen threads. It can be a net, a metal trash can, or just a wire drawn over it.

    What to do? We outline the drawing on the basis and start "embroidery" - almost like on the fabric, only on the furniture facade. You can decorate the entire composition with the same homemade pom-poms set on glue.

    5. Pipe decor

    If there is neither time nor desire to paint and drag old furniture, you can simply decorate it. The materials left over from the repair will come to the rescue, in particular - plumbing pipes.

    What to do? Designer Victoria Pashinskaya proposes to make an unusual decoration out of them by sawing them into pieces, assembling the structure with the help of screws and decorating it with small decor.

    This design can be included in the interior as a separate element; cover with glass and get a coffee table; use it as a basement or decorate a furniture facade with it, using it as niches for storing small things.

    Soviet-era furniture - walls, wardrobes, dressers - is not distinguished by its beauty, but it is reliable and sturdy. Well, just a hand does not rise to carry it to the landfill. And rightly so. It is very easy to update it, giving it a completely new sound and modern look... Alteration of cabinet-type furniture may not be very difficult: there are materials that allow you to significantly change the appearance with a little effort. The easiest way is to change the color and fittings. With the fittings, everything is clear - you will choose what is more suitable in style, and the color changes in two ways - paint and glue the film (or wallpaper).

    Alteration of the old wall: changing the design

    Covering old furniture with self-adhesive foil is the easiest way to change the decor. The film is today both plain and colored, different colors, textures and shades. It makes no sense to glue a film with a pattern under a tree: not that is in trend today. But plain or with a pattern is what can turn an old wall into new furniture. The actions are simple, but the work requires accuracy. But the result is excellent. See two photos. On the first, the old Soviet wall from before the renovation, on the second - after.

    Renovation of an old furniture wall - before and after

    Now about how it was updated. We used a compacted self-adhesive furniture film, cream color, matt surface. The open part of the old wall was closed with glass doors, and a translucent matte film was used for the glass. Edging - furniture layout (also self-adhesive) chrome color. The order of work is as follows:

    • All that can be removed, removed, disassembled. Take off your old hardware.
    • The surfaces must be clean and free from grease. This is easier to achieve with a soft cloth dipped in detergent for dishes. Then everything is washed off with warm water with a little vinegar. Wipe clean with a dry cloth.
    • Cut out the details. It is better to cut the film 8-10 mm more. The remains are then cut off with a paper knife.
    • Spray the part to be pasted with water from a spray bottle. On a wet surface, the film can be moved if something goes wrong. You can even peel it off without damaging it.
    • After removing the protective layer from the film, carefully lay it out. Once aligned, start smoothing with a soft cloth from the middle to the edges. Try to avoid bubbles. To do this, you need to move gradually, without jumping from place to place.
    • If there is a bubble, it can be pierced with a thin needle approximately in the middle. Then, expel air from the edges of the bubble to the hole and wipe the puncture site.
    • After gluing the film, take a clean thin cotton cloth, spread it on top and iron it with a warm iron (medium heating).
    • We glue the trim, install new handles.

    Such a sequence of work with every detail. Everything is the same with glass, only you need to glue it on the inner surface. After assembly, you have an updated wall. This technique can be used for any item: chest of drawers, bedside tables, wardrobe, etc.

    For example, after a successful experiment with the wall, they reworked in the same way old wardrobe and added it to the right. The entire wall is now occupied. In the same way, you can update the kitchen set: glue the self-adhesive film and replace the handles.

    There is a second way. It is a modification of the proposed method, but simpler and not so laborious. Only the doors are pasted over and not with foil, but with wallpaper on a non-woven basis. Wallpaper is glued on PVA glue. To prevent the edges from tearing, the parts are cut 5 mm less on all sides. It turns out a kind of edging. Everything looks good (example in the photo below).

    Why this method is good: it is easy to change the decor. Tired of the old appearance, cut off the wallpaper, pasted on new ones. Despite the fact that the method seems frivolous, the appearance persists for several years. Its author tried it even on kitchen set... Only the wallpaper on top is covered twice with PVA glue. In this case, the cabinets can be washed. It is important to apply a layer of varnish evenly, without sagging, there are no other difficulties.

    Sometimes the wallpaper is varnished. But before you do this, try to do it on the unnecessary piece: see how they react to it.

    When choosing a varnish, you need to remember that acrylic and cellulose varnishes remain transparent after drying, polyurethane ones turn yellow over time. Also, polyurethane is almost not softened by solvents: it can only be removed mechanically (from wood - cleaned with sandpaper).

    Dresser update

    The old chest of drawers stood for an unknown number of years in the attic, but it is very strong and reliable, not a single gram of cracked, only the polish is cracked. In terms of strength, it is much superior to modern products. This is the feature that is inherent in old, still Soviet times, furniture. It is not very detailed (to put it mildly), but after having stood for several decades in poor conditions, it remains strong. Alteration of the chest of drawers is more complicated: two techniques were used: painting, and then decorating using polyurethane moldings and wallpaper.

    Step 1. We remove the fittings, remove the old coating. In some places, the polishing was scraped, in places it was sanded with sandpaper. The chips were covered with putty on wood, waited until it dries. At the final stage, everything was sanded with fine grain sandpaper. In this case, the chest of drawers is steel as in the photo below.

    This is after it was putty and leveled with sandpaper

    Step 2... Installation of polyurethane moldings. When choosing moldings, make sure that they are not bulky: too thick on a small chest of drawers will look very rough. They should be no wider than 5 cm and as narrow as possible when viewed in profile.

    Purchased polyurethane moldings are neatly cut, corners are sawn at 45 °. (). The pattern must match perfectly. We glue them on PVA. For reliability, it can be additionally fixed on self-tapping screws with wide heads. A small depression is made under them, after the self-tapping screw is screwed in, the hole is covered with putty. Try to make the putty immediately lay down perfectly (you can touch up with a wet finger), since it is problematic to clean off the dried one.

    Moldings are glued and set on self-tapping screws

    Step 3. Everything is treated with a primer. You can use PVA glue diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 2. After the primer is dry, paint (two layers). For this case, acrylic paint was selected on water based... The color is coffee with milk, although it looks very different in the photo. Color rendition is inaccurate.

    This is after the second paint application. Pretty

    Step 4. For decoration, we chose wallpaper with a covering made using the silk-screen printing technique. Pieces are cut to the size of the inner part of the frames from moldings, glued to PVA. After the glue dries, the entire dresser is twice covered with water-based varnish.

    Step 5. And the last to be installed are new legs (furniture wheels) and handles.

    Installing handles and legs)) The updated chest of drawers is not at all similar to the one you saw in the first photo.

    As you can see, there are no complicated jobs. Everything is really elementary. But all processes require accuracy - the appearance depends on it. You can also update the old wardrobe in the same way. You will get a kit for the room. Stylish and original.

    When renewing furniture, it is worst of all if the surface is varnished. The varnish takes a long time and is difficult to peel off. If the surface is even and the polish is intact, you can apply a primer for difficult surfaces and paint after drying. This greatly speeds up the process of painting lacquered furniture.

    If you have children and a summer cottage or yard, you may be interested in reading with a lot of photos. And about

    How to update an old nightstand

    In the photo gallery below you can see the process of restoration of an old polished bedside table. First, the old polish was removed from it, putty, sanded and after processing it was painted twice with acrylic paint. Then paper with an interesting pattern was glued to the doors (it was a gift paper bag). After drying, the whole was covered with two coats of semi-gloss acrylic varnish.

    The sequence of work is simple, if you know how to do it. All processes will repeat the sequence of actions that you saw on the example of updating the chest of drawers. The result is impressive too.

    Do-it-yourself furniture alteration is a painstaking business, but the result is worth it. Below is a photo of a bedside table restored using a simple technique: it is pasted over with embossed wallpaper, and varnish is applied twice on top.

    Redesigning the table

    By the same technology, banal Coffee table can be turned into a modern piece of furniture. In this case, it was covered with wrapping paper. It is dense, adheres well and does not sour when varnished.

    Before starting work on decorating the table top, the legs of the old table and the edges of the table top were painted in a light color: this way it suits the new design style more. Further, the process of its transformation began.

    When pasting, the panel is cut out much more than the dimensions of the table top. This is how it should be. The paper is glued on PVA, rolled with a roller so that there are no lumps and swellings. The surface must be absolutely smooth.

    Once pasted, take sandpaper with fine grain (it is more convenient to work if it is attached to the bar). Passing it along the edge, fold it over and at the same time separate the excess paper.

    Even with a guillotine cut, you will not get a sufficiently straight edge. And with this method, it turns out to be professionally decorated. It doesn't smell like amateur performance.

    After the glue has dried, the surface is covered twice with a thin layer of varnish. You need to apply it with a soft brush in a small amount. Layers are applied in different directions: first along the long side, then across.

    Alteration of furniture: photo ideas

    Do-it-yourself furniture alteration is a creative business. Even boring can be made great thing... And it is not at all necessary to repeat exactly what you see. Many useful ideas comes during the execution of the "project". The only pity is that some of the plans are not as attractive as they seemed. Try it, experiment. Do you want to create a unique interior at no extra cost?

    Old furniture will help you with this, a photo of the alteration of which you can find with us.

    There are many ways to transform old, familiar items.

    The choice of method depends on the purpose of using the furniture and the type of coating, as well as its condition at the time of the renovation.

    You can find a step-by-step photo master class for making furniture with your own hands from old interior items on our website. The furniture renovation process includes two main stages:

    • repair;
    • decoration.

    Let's consider in more detail what to focus on.

    Repair of tables

    Tables are distinguished by functionality into writing, dining, kitchen and magazine tables. Depending on their purpose, their structure also differs, and, consequently, the process of restoration. Usually, dining tables consist of 4 legs, bow and table top. They can be solid or folding. When reworking such furniture, you should pay special attention to the condition of all elements, as well as their fastening. The legs should be the same, no damage. They can be replaced if necessary.

    The table top, in turn, is the main part of the table. Its surface must be smooth, free from grooves, crevices and corrosion. If necessary, you can use wood putty to achieve the desired effect. With its help, you can easily and quickly eliminate all surface imperfections. If necessary, it can also be used to repair legs. The same scheme is used when repairing coffee tables.

    Kitchen tables have their own characteristics. Before proceeding with the repair, it is necessary to conduct a complete inspection of this piece of furniture. The strength of the countertop plays an important role. She must withstand heavy loads and physical stress. In this regard, the foundation on which it is installed must also be strong.

    An example of using wood putty, which will help correct all the unevenness of an old countertop

    Note! Kitchen tables are not only a place to work, but are also used to store kitchen utensils. For this, drawers, shelves and doors are built into them. They should be given special attention.

    If the table is equipped with shelves, then you should pay attention to their fasteners. If necessary, special caps made of wood or plastic can be purchased at a furniture store, and a thin, durable metal corner can also be used as a fastener for the shelves. Pay attention to the condition of the awnings with which the door is attached. It is best to replace them with new ones, as with frequent use this part lends itself to the greatest wear and tear.

    The freshness of natural wood is given by special polishing agents that can be found in any hardware or furniture store.

    If the table is equipped with drawers, then check how firmly their sides and bottom are connected. To facilitate their use, you can replace the fittings with which the drawers are pulled out. You can buy it at a furniture store. You can also buy there different types comfortable handles.

    Advice! When replacing awnings, choose ones that are designed for furniture. They will provide more convenient and reliable door operation.

    When repairing a desk, you should pay attention to all of the above. Having looked detailed master class by remodeling old furniture with your own hands, you can repeat it yourself.

    Repair of cabinets and bedside tables

    Each house has furniture that is designed for storage. As a rule, it is different types and the size of cabinets and cabinets. They can be different in height, depth, roominess. Moreover, each of them can become a real decoration of your apartment. To do this, see how to restore old furniture with your own hands next.

    Quite an extravagant and extraordinary element of the interior - a bedside table from an old suitcase

    First of all, it is worth inspecting all the shelf mounts and, if necessary, replacing them with new ones. You can also replace the drawer mounts with more functional and modern ones.

    Door fixing methods may vary depending on size. The cabinets and small cabinets use awnings. They wear out quickly, so when carrying out repairs, it is best to replace them with new ones.

    If you are remodeling a large wardrobe and it has movable doors, then over time, its fittings may also wear out. In a furniture store, you can find special fastening rollers for sliding doors cabinet.

    How impressive in this case the restored old furniture looks, see below in the photo.

    Repair of chairs

    It is hard to imagine any home without chairs. Today it is such an ordinary subject that few people pay attention to it. This can happen in two cases - either when the chair is properly designed as an interior item, or when it breaks down. We will consider how to come from the second option to the first.

    The option of restoring old armchairs with covers in vintage style

    The chair consists of three main elements:

    • legs;
    • seats;
    • backs.

    All of them may fail sooner or later. If the legs become the cause of the breakage, then they must be firmly fixed, since otherwise the use of the chair becomes dangerous. If the seat breaks, then it can be replaced by cutting out a corresponding piece from plywood or fiberboard. The same can be done with the backrest. You can also soften the stool if you wish. To do this, a soft foam-based upholstery must be attached to the seat and backrest.

    Advice! If you decide to install or replace the upholstery on the chair, it is best to use fabric stitched to the foam rubber. You can find one in a textile store, and it is worth fixing it with a construction stapler.

    Old furniture: photos of design options using painting

    As you know, any piece of furniture should be not only functional, but also attractive. Therefore, when old furniture is being updated, the photo of which you can see below, it is necessary to break down the work into several stages. The first step is surface preparation.

    It is necessary to clean the furniture from traces of old paint, varnish, as well as from dirt. After that, it is necessary to putty the cracks, if any, and then apply a primer. Then you can apply the base. To do this, you need to choose a paint of the appropriate color.

    Advice! It is best to use a water-based acrylic paint. It does not contain toxic substances, does not emit a strong odor and dries quickly. This gives the surface a glossy, attractive appearance. But if you are good with an aerosol can, then it will work.

    Decorating

    The restoration of old furniture, photos of which are presented below, includes decor. You can use different techniques and combine them. The most common is decoupage. To do this, you need the following:

    • the required image printed on paper;
    • PVA glue;
    • glue brush;
    • varnish, preferably water-based acrylic;
    • brush for applying varnish.

    Decoupage - fascinating activity, and furniture made using this technique looks very delicate and unusual

    Advice! It is best to use large colored napkins with appropriate motives as the image.

    Lubricate the surface with glue, gently attach and smooth the picture. Let everything dry a little, then open it with varnish. It is worth noting that there is no doubt about the effectiveness of using this method during the restoration of old furniture with your own hands.

    Another equally interesting decorating method is the application of patterns using lace. To do this, you will need:

    • lace;
    • paint of the corresponding color;
    • Scotch.

    Take a piece of lace and attach it to the place you plan to decorate. Secure the ends with tape. It is advisable to cover the rest of the area with paper or film. Apply paint with a brush or use aerosol cans. Let the product dry. Remove the tape, paper, and lace.

    Advice! If you want to decorate a large area, then it is best to use a piece of guipure of the appropriate size.

    Both of the above methods are quite effective. Instead of lace and guipure, you can use paper templates. As a rule, often when decoupage and restoration of old furniture, wallpaper left over after repair is used.

    Padding of upholstered furniture

    Over time, the upholstery of sofas and armchairs not only loses its attractive appearance, but can also sag heavily, become not as soft as before. But if you do not want to throw away your favorite piece of furniture or do not have the funds to buy a new one, you can carry out the hauling at home.

    Decoration of upholstered furniture upholstery

    If you change both layers of upholstery, you can apply different types of decoration options that will give your furniture a more aesthetic look. There are many ways to do this. We'll look at two of the most common:

      The fabric used for the stretch can be stitched in with patterned seams. This will create a special decorative effect. Purchase buttons or textile clips and use them to tighten the fabric and foam rubber, connecting them together.

    A small workshop on sewing a removable cover for a pouf

    When making a cover, you can use a variety of decor techniques. You can put embroidery in a certain place. If you wish, you can sew on the applique. For this, fragments of the pattern are cut out of pieces of fabric and sewn to the base, forming a single picture.

    You can also apply the currently popular patchwork - the art of making products from rags. In this case, you can use pieces of old unnecessary things to make a cover.

    Updating the story with plywood

    Scuffs, stains and even torn upholstery on the backside can be hidden with a special overlay. To make it you will need:

    plywood; small metal corners; the smallest furniture screws.

    You can cut the plywood yourself or ask for help from specialists where you will purchase it. You will need 5 pieces according to the size of your paper. The cover should cover the outside, inside, back, front and top. After making measurements, just make 5 corresponding rectangles and fasten them from the inside of the structure using corners and self-tapping screws.

    Further, it is enough to simply put on the structure on the past. It can not only play the role of decoration, but also be quite functional. You can use the overlay as a mini table. If necessary, apply paint or decorate it in any way convenient for you.

    Advice! After making the plywood trim, sand it on both sides with sandpaper.
