    Electric underfloor heating

    For the most part, they are divided into three groups:

    • Cable. The heating element is made in the form of a cable fixed on a special tape or metal mesh. When laying, they require a careful calculation of the required cable length, as well as a fairly solid screed with a height of 30 to 50 mm.
    • Heating mats. Most often this is the same cable, but fixed to a fiberglass mesh. Such warm floors are much easier to install and require less screed - up to 30 mm. Tile adhesive can also play the role of a screed: in this case, heating mats are placed in its thickness.
    • Film: heating elements are placed in a fairly thin film. According to the material of the heating elements, carbon and bimetallic (copper and aluminum) types of film warm floors are distinguished. Unlike the first two groups of electrical heating systems, heat transfer is carried out mainly due to infrared radiation, therefore they are often called infrared warm floors.

    Is it possible to combine film warm floors and ceramic tiles?

    Before laying an infrared floor under the tiles, you should decide: is it worth doing? The opinions of professionals on this matter are ambiguous.

    Installation of infrared underfloor heating is primarily advisable for such types of flooring as laminate, linoleum, carpet. But with tiles, the situation is more complicated.

    Opponents of laying film warm floors under tiles put forward the following arguments:

    • The heating film itself has extremely low adhesion, which leads to the risk of the screed or glue peeling off from it. This, in turn, can lead to such undesirable consequences as the appearance of voids and cracks in the screed.
    • Higher energy consumption than heating cables or mats.
    • It is impossible to exclude the gradual corrosion of the film with adhesives with an alkaline base.
    • It is quite difficult to lay a film warm floor under the tiles. The utmost care and accuracy must be observed. At the same time, cable or matt electric heating elements can be installed quite simply to achieve the desired effect.

    But there are a number of advantages of this material, taking into account which, you can decide to lay an infrared warm floor under the tiles:

    • Minimum screed thickness. If it is not possible to painlessly reduce the height of the room, then film floors are the only option to provide heating of the tile. A screed is required no more than 8-10 mm.
    • Such warm floors are more reliable. If the elements are connected in parallel, then the failure of one of them will not lead to a failure of the entire system. Damage to the cable or the conductive circuit of the mat will inevitably render the heating system inoperative.
    • Infrared heating elements are not sources of electromagnetic radiation.

    Taking into account the peculiarities of the system, we can conclude that it is advisable to use infrared film floors under the tiles in small rooms with low ceilings.

    Preparatory work

    Like any other underfloor heating systems, infrared film requires careful preparation of the base:

    • It is necessary to eliminate the protrusions and existing in the base surface.
    • For wiring and installing the thermostat, grooves are made in the wall. As a rule, the thermostat is placed near the switch. This is more comfortable. If necessary, hollow out a groove in the floor to accommodate the temperature sensor.
    • A layer of thermal insulation is laid, professionals recommend a perforated isolon with a heat-reflecting foil surface. The thermal insulation is laid with the foil side up so that the heat goes back into the room, and is attached to the base with metallized tape.

    Do not install insulation around the perimeter of the room at a distance of 20 cm from the wall. This is done in order to provide a more secure attachment to the edge tiles.

    Heating foil laying

    The set of infrared warm floors necessarily includes detailed instructions on installation. Many manufacturers even supply the product with CDs, where everything is described in steps. But it will be useful to know some of the nuances of laying the film:

    • The film is not laid in a continuous array, but at intervals of 50–100 mm.
    • The stripes must not be allowed to overlap one another.
    • Adhesive tape is used to fix the elements on thermal insulation.
    • It is necessary to cut the film along special cutting lines.
    • It is better to place the elements with contacts in the direction where the thermostat is located. This will shorten the length of the wires.
    • To prevent the wires from protruding above the surface of the film in the thermal insulation, special grooves can be made under them.
    • According to the instructions, a clamp is attached to the copper strip for supplying electricity. After connecting the wires, all contacts must be reliably protected with bitumen insulation or heat-shrinkable insulating tubes.
    • A temperature sensor is installed. It can be located in a special groove, in a corrugated tube. Its end is securely closed with a cap. In another variant of placement, it is attached under the film, for which a hole of the appropriate shape is cut in the insulation.
    • Connecting to the thermostat is in progress. If you are not confident in your abilities, then it is better to use the services of a professional electrician.
    • After checking the functionality of the system, a layer of ordinary plastic film is laid, which is fixed with tape.

    Special attention is paid to the preparation of the foundation. As already mentioned, it should be perfectly flat. Plus, there should be no flaws, chips, etc. on the floor surface.     4. Non-moisture resistance. The connection points of the film with the supply wire are not sealed, which means that if a pipe breaks through, moisture can simply short-circuit the entire system, or the phase voltage will be on the surface of the tile.

    By laying an infrared warm floor under the tiles in residential or utility rooms, you can solve the issue of heating not only in an apartment or house. Thin film elements allow the system to be installed without lifting the floor and pouring a concrete screed.

    Can a film floor be installed under tiles?

    When buying thin heating elements, the following questions often arise:

    • what kind of IR film to lay;
    • laying infrared underfloor heating under the tiles seems unrealizable or too difficult.

    Builders use 2 lungs and quick ways installation:

    • dry, using GVL or glass magnesite sheet (MSL);
    • wet, i.e. a thin concrete screed.

    To install an infrared underfloor heating under porcelain stoneware or tiles, it is worth choosing a floor with carbon elements. The finishes will not damage the thin carbon strips as the film will be covered. It is possible to install a film warm floor under the tiles even in rooms with high humidity, but still it would be more correct to use a resistive cable for tiles.

    Necessary materials

    Before work, you need to prepare the following materials:

    • heat-insulating substrate (technical plug, EPS, isolon, etc.);
    • depending on the installation method - self-leveling bulk composition or moisture-resistant GVL / LSU;
    • liquid nails or dowels;
    • scotch tape and bituminous tape;
    • polyethylene film;
    • plastic reinforcing mesh;
    • film floor for tiles and accessories (clamps, wires, etc.);
    • thermostat;
    • tile adhesive and ceramics, depending on the choice of topcoat;
    • multimeter or screwdriver probe;
    • pliers, drill with attachments, scissors and tape measure.

    Installation steps

    The calculation of the cost of heating is carried out together with the preparation of an installation plan. Heaters are placed only on an area free of furniture, therefore, it is required to mark its location on the plan, and indent 5-7 cm from the free walls. The rest of the space is divided into strips equal to the width of the heaters and the required amount in meters is calculated.

    It is necessary to lay infrared warm floors under the tiles in several stages:

    • prepare a base for IR heaters;
    • install a heating system;
    • connect and check it;
    • lay the base for the tiles and glue the material.

    Preparation

    The base must be cleaned of debris and potholes repaired. The technology of installing an infrared warm floor provides for the installation of insulation from heat-saving materials. For this, coatings with low shrinkage and without a foil layer (cork, EPS, etc.) are used. You can attach them to the rough base with liquid nails, and to the concrete with dowels with self-tapping screws. It is advisable to lay thermal insulation over the entire area of ​​the room. On the floor, make a markup according to the plan, indicating the boundaries of the installation of elements and strips of material.

    Installation of thermal film

    Before laying the infrared underfloor heating film, roll material need to be cut into strips according to the markings. It is necessary to cut the material only in specially marked places where the scissors are depicted. The strips of IR heaters should not overlap each other; leave a gap of 5-7 mm between the strips of the film floor. You can fix the tape to the floor with liquid nails.

    Connection

    Assemble the infrared floor heating system in the following sequence:

    1. Install the terminal clamps at the exit points of the copper busbars, press them down with pliers.
    2. Determine the installation location of the thermostat on the wall.
    3. Cut the installation wires of sufficient length to connect the underfloor heating to the network.
    4. To connect the wires to the terminals, insert them into the terminals and crimp them with pliers or a special tool. Connect adjacent tapes in parallel.
    5. Glue the joints and edges around the perimeter with tape, insulate the terminals and edges of the tires with bitumen tape.
    6. Place the thermal sensor under the foil. Lead the wires from the strips of the film to the place of inclusion in the network and carry out their installation. Check the performance of the system with a tester, determining the absence of an open circuit on each tape, and then on the entire system.

    Subfloor installation

    Depending on the choice of dry or wet method, prepare the materials: mix the self-leveling compound with water or cut the gypsum fiber board. For moisture insulation, cover the installed TP system with polyethylene, leaving allowances at the edges of at least 5 cm. Carefully glue the perimeter with tape. Depending on the peculiarities of laying the film floor under the tiles on a concrete base, proceed as follows:

    1. Dry method. Cover the entire area of ​​the room with cut plates of GVL or LSU. Fasten elements to liquid nails or self-tapping screws with dowels. Screw in the threaded fasteners carefully, in the gaps between the TP strips or in the places intended for cutting off parts. Do not drive a screw into a tire or carbon strips. If necessary, the rough coating is performed in 2 layers, overlapping the seams of the lower level.

    Laying tiles

    Before laying the ceramic coating, the surface of the base must be treated with concrete contact in 2 layers. Install insulation around the perimeter of the wall to create a thermal joint.     Align the ceramic elements in height, pressing them against the adhesive. Allow the glue to harden, fill the joints with grout, pressing it into the gaps with a rubber spatula. Remove the remains of the composition from the ceramics with a wet cloth, without allowing them to dry. After installation, care for the ceramics according to the general rules.
