• What can be cooked from squid: quick and tasty

    In the process of installing internal pipelines for any purpose, plumbers have to cut pipes into pieces of a certain length.

    This is done using a special tool - a pipe cutter.

    With a small amount of work, some craftsmen get by with a hacksaw, while others make a pipe cutter with their own hands.

    The pipe cutter does not belong to the category of universal tools - it will not work to cut a steel and plastic pipe with one device.

    There are, however, models designed for different materials, but this is rather an exception to general rule... Therefore, you should buy the device only after you have precisely decided on the choice of pipes.

    In some cases, pipe cutters designed for cutting steel pipes cut softer materials, but the quality of the cut suffers. For example, a copper pipe can be deformed with such a tool.

    Plastic pipes are cut with roller pipe cutters. Their performance is low, but the cut is perfect. Propylene pipes can be cut with a cordless pipe cutter designed specifically for this material. It provides a high working speed, but the pipe size is limited to a diameter of 42 mm.

    Thin plastic pipes can be cut with special scissors... They are inexpensive and easy to work with. But with large volumes, scissors are not suitable - hands quickly get tired.

    Wall thickness

    Pipe cutters are designed for a specific range of pipe wall thickness. Depending on this parameter, they are divided into three groups:

    1. Heavy Duty: Used when cutting cast iron and steel pipes with a diameter of 12 inches or more. Pipe cutters of this group are equipped with reliable latches-clamps.
    2. For cutting workpieces from thin-walled pipes - metal-plastic, stainless, copper and brass.

    Asbestos-cement and ceramic sewer pipes cut with chain pipe cutters. They can cut pipes with a diameter of 50 to 150 mm. For pipes of large diameters - up to 300 mm - a tool with an extended chain is used.

    Design features

    Structurally, pipe cutters differ in the type of cutting unit:

    • rotary or rotary;
    • with a ratchet mechanism;
    • telescopic;
    • chain;
    • with a ratchet mechanism;
    • incisal;
    • roller.

    The latter are most often used for cutting steel pipes. There can be several cutting rollers - up to three. In addition, the design also includes guide rollers that hold the workpiece in the desired position. The more rollers there are, the larger the pipe diameter the pipe cutter can cut.

    Roller pipe cutter

    Single-roller models cope with diameters of 15-50 mm, for three-roller models this range expands to 100 mm.

    The cutting pipe cutter is a holder with one or two cutters fixed in it. The movement of the working unit occurs under the influence of the threaded rod.

    The action of the pipe cutters is to gradually pull the chains equipped with cutting rollers around the pipe.

    A special machine called a pipe bender is used to bend water supply pipes. - views and drawings of the device, as well as manufacturing instructions.

    We will consider the methods of connecting pipes made of metal-plastic.

    Operating principle

    According to the principle of operation, pipe cutters are classified as follows:

    • manual;
    • electrical;
    • with pneumatic drive;
    • with hydraulic drive.

    Manual pipe cutters can be attributed to household tools. They are inexpensive, easy to use, so no special skills are required from the worker.

    Electrical they are highly effective, do not require excessive physical effort. They are more expensive than manual ones, so it makes sense to buy them only in the case of large-scale works.

    Manual pipe cutters

    Use cutting fluids to prolong the life of the electric pipe cutter and obtain a high quality cut.

    DIY pipe cutter

    Let's consider how to make a pipe cutter for steel and other types of pipes with your own hands. Homemade gadgets for cutting pipes - not uncommon. Craftsmen make pipe cutters from scrap materials that have been lying around for years in garages to no avail. And many adapt a grinder for this purpose (do-it-yourself pipe cutter from a grinder), resulting in a kind of cutting machine.

    Aerobatics - making a plasma pipe cutter. Flywheels from trucks, gears from bendix and plasma cutters serve as the basis for this design. But for the manufacture of this monster, metalworking machines are needed, so it is difficult to build it in the garage.

    Homemade cutting machine

    But there are also the simplest models of self-made pipe cutters, for the manufacture of which materials are used that are in abundance in the home workshop of a thrifty owner.

    A self-made pipe cutter is quite tolerable for cutting pipe sections in small volumes.

    Required tools and materials

    To make the device, you will need a general-purpose tool:

    • spanners;
    • yew;
    • hacksaw for metal;
    • files and files;
    • screwdriver;
    • hammer.

    The starting materials are:

    • square wire rod 15x15 mm;
    • bolt М8;
    • screws M6;
    • hacksaw blades;
    • spring;
    • steel strips 15x4 mm.

    Prepare metal rivets with a diameter of 4 mm.

    Sequence of work

    Start work with the preparation of the tool and the workplace. After you have conveniently placed everything you need, proceed with the basic operations.

    Making the left side of the pipe cutter

    Cut a piece of wire rod 135 mm long. Tuck in the lower end of the workpiece with a radius or chamfer and round them with a file.

    Then, at a distance of 90 mm from the straight end of the workpiece, drill a hole for the clamping bolt. The hole diameter is 8.2-8.5 mm.

    The blade teeth on the right and left side of the pipe cutter must point to the same direction.

    From the side of the rounded end, drill a hole for the axle. It can be made from a bar with a diameter of 8 mm or find a suitable finished part.

    Making the right side

    You will have to tinker with the right side a little longer. Firstly, its base, made of wire rod, has a complex shape: from the side of the working part, it is necessary to form two sections 40 mm long, making an angle of 30 degrees with the horizontal and 90-120 degrees between each other (in projection, the picture resembles the roof of a house) ...

    Tuck the remaining loose shank under the handle.

    Attach tight to the bent parts of the part - by analogy with the right side of the product.

    In the body of the wire rod, on the left side, mark the center of the threaded hole into which the pressure bolt will be screwed.

    Fasten a steel strip opposite the hole on the left for installing the axle.

    Its length should be such that the distance from the center of the axis to the nearest edge of the handle is 30 mm.

    A hole for the axle is drilled in the strip beforehand.

    Assembly

    Insert a clamping bolt into the hole on the left side of the pipe cutter and put a spring on it (it should be between the left and right parts of the device).

    Replace the axle. Its ends can be riveted, only in this case you will receive an integral connection of the device parts.

    The role of the axis can be played by a pair of screw-nut. This design will allow you to disassemble the pipe cutter if necessary.

    After installing the axle, screw the thrust bolt into the threaded hole located on the right side of the structure.

    Video on the topic

    In plumbing, when working with steel pipelines, it is often necessary to divide the original workpiece into fragments of a certain size. Of course, a universal hacksaw for metal can also help out, but it is not always convenient to work with it, and the ends of the cut parts are subject to subsequent cleaning. Much better with such operations will cope with the correctly selected pipe cutter.

    Types and classification of pipe cutters

    The task of a pipe cutter of any design is not only to quickly cut the pipe, but also to fix the workpiece qualitatively before processing. Especially when it comes to steel pipes, for the separation of which much more force must be applied than for copper or plastic products.

    Pipe cutters for steel pipes are distinguished by the following features:

    1. By the thickness of the pipe wall (there is a tool that is designed to cut thick-walled pipes).
    2. According to the design of the clamping unit, pipe cutters with clamp, lever and screw clamps are produced.
    3. According to the execution of the cutting unit - roller, chain, incisor or ratchet (the latter is more often used for cutting low-plastic materials, and chain pipe cutters are more useful when cutting pipes made of metal-plastic).
    4. By the type of drive - with manual, electric or hydraulic. In the professional production of tubular billets, pneumatic-driven pipe cutters are also used, however, although they cut pipes with a diameter of up to 120 ... 130 mm, they are rather cumbersome and require a compressor.

    The steel pipe cutter must also have some unique features... For example, the blades of the working tool (regardless of the version) must have a hardness not less than 15 ... 20 HRC higher than the hardness of the pipe material. In order to carry out such an assessment, use in a known way determination of the approximate chemical composition of the steel pipe material by the "spark test" method. For this, the end of the pipe is processed on an emery grinder. The approximate percentage of carbon will be most accurately established, however, tungsten, molybdenum and manganese can also be identified in this way, and, therefore, the initial hardness and even the approximate grade of the steel pipe material can be established:

    • For mild unalloyed steel, the spark beam will be fairly solid and light yellow in color;
    • For medium carbon unalloyed steel, while maintaining the same beam color, the number of bifurcations and brighter flares will increase;
    • For steel of ordinary quality, the spark flow will be thinner, and the branches will be shorter. There are practically no outbreaks;
    • For alloy steel, the color of the sparks will change to a thick yellow, and at their ends, instead of flashes, arrows will be observed more elongated along the flow.

    Knowing the approximate hardness of the listed steels, you can choose the optimal hardness of the working blades.

    Working Principle of Manual Steel Pipe Cutters

    The easiest way to cut the material is with roller pipe cutters. The main unit of the tool is a rigid holder, in the movable part of which circular knives are installed (there can be one, two or three of them). The relative position of the knives can be adjusted, depending on the outer diameter of the pipe (the maximum diameter for roller pipe cutters is considered to be a diameter of up to 100 mm). For long pipes, a tool is available that also includes guide rollers. They ensure the longitudinal stability of the workpiece when it is cut.
    Before using the roller pipe cutter, perform the following preparatory transitions:

    • Moisten the separation surface: this cleans the outer perimeter and partially removes rust / scale;
    • With the help of a clamp, the pipe is fixed in the holder, focusing on the marked cutting line;

    Then, with the help of the rod, the cutter head is moved along the perimeter of the pipe, and, gradually increasing the feed, the cut is made. With well-sharpened knives, the cut is clean and free of burrs. In order to simplify the design in roller pipe cutters designed for pipes of small diameters - up to 20 ... 30 mm - the rod is combined with the handle, when moving it, the cutting is performed.

    It is not recommended to use roller pipe cutters for cutting pipes with a diameter of more than 40 mm. Although the price of such a manual pipe cutter is small, the cut is not of high quality, and the physical effort expended in this case is quite large.

    More simple design have pipe cutters, which are widely used in living conditions for cutting steel pipes with a diameter of up to 10 ... 15 mm. Instead of rotating when cutting circular knives cutters are used here, which, with a constantly increasing feed, gradually bite into the thickness of the steel. It is advisable to use manual pipe cutters for cutting pipes made of plastic materials (up to steel grade 15kp inclusive, or for ordinary quality steels of grades St.1 or St.2kp). In this case, the specific load on the cutters is minimal, and the tool does not need frequent regrinds, which require a certain skill to complete. Efforts can be reduced by lubricating the surface with low viscosity industrial oil, or any coolant.

    To cut pipes of especially large diameters (up to 150… 200 mm), rotary pipe cutters with a telescopic roller turning mechanism are used. Such structures are convenient in that they can be used in unfavorable conditions for work (for example, in excavations or pits). The rollers are mounted here along the outer perimeter of the pipe, and then, using a special lever equipped with a mechanical amplifier, they are pressed against the surface of the pipe. By gradually increasing the feed, the separation is performed. The cut is made not so much by force as by the developed torque.

    Electric pipe cutters

    At large volume it is advisable to use a tool with an external drive for this kind of work, although their price is noticeably higher. Electric pipe cutters are especially convenient (in the presence of a stationary AC network).

    A typical design of an electrically driven pipe cutter for cutting ductile steel includes:

    1. Shock-resistant housing with ventilation slots.
    2. High-speed drive motor rated for 220 V.
    3. Three stop rollers for the required cutting precision.
    4. Cutting tool, mounted in a tool holder on the motor shaft and shielded from the thrust area.
    5. Reducing gear.

    The mass of electric pipe cutters does not exceed 1.5 kg, however, many designs provide for fastening the tool to locksmith's bench... No lubrication of the working area is required during cutting.
    The design of electric pipe cutters for cutting more durable metal products is distinguished by the absence of a gearbox, and therefore the number of revolutions of the cutting tool reaches 3000 ... 4000 per minute. In such conditions, the supply of lubricant to the separation zone is mandatory. The working tool is made of carbide grade BK5 or BK8, and the disc itself is covered with a removable casing.

    The construction of a hydraulic pipe cutter includes a working cylinder, a rod and a piston, and the required pressure is created by a compact hydraulic pump, which is included in the package. The cutter stroke is regulated by changing the pressure of the working fluid - water. Hydraulic pipe cutters can be used in any conditions, but they are inferior in power to models with an electric drive.

    Capabilities of the most popular models of hand-held pipe cutting tools

    Actively promotes its products to the specialized markets of the country trademark RIGID. Pipe cutters from this company are compact in size, and at the same time, they cut pipes of both alloyed and unalloyed steel with high quality. In order to reduce the cutting force, the feed unit is equipped with rolling bearings, which reduce friction losses. The return of the cutting rollers to their original position is carried out by a spring device. The very fastening of the rollers is unified and quick-detachable, which makes it easier to service the tool. All pipe cutter parts are made from of stainless steel therefore the pipe can be cut even in a humid environment (for example, under water). The disadvantage of pipe cutters from RIGID is the design of the handle, which does not allow developing a large torque during operation.

    REED Company produces pipe chain cutters that have proven themselves well in the execution of renovation works on cast iron pipelines. REED's SUPER range uses a roller design, and is more suitable for cutting steel pipes. Cutting discs are made of highly resistant tool steels, which eliminates the appearance of burrs at the interface. Compared to conventional pipe cutters, the tool has a more comfortable power handle shape, but is not designed for work in high humidity conditions. Presetting of the tool and its readjustment during the operation are not required.

    Rothenberger manufactures disk-type pipe cutters, which are equipped with a convenient clamp-type clamping mechanism, which is easily reconfigured for cutting steel pipes of different diameters. The roller tool is characterized by increased strength and rigidity, and therefore can cut pipes with thick walls with high quality. In terms of cut quality, Rothenberger pipe cutters are not inferior to those discussed above, however, they are equipped with an extended set of cutting rollers, and therefore are also suitable for working with copper or cast iron pipes.

    Among different types steel pipes are still one of the most common. It's all about their strength. resilience to large external loads and internal pressure.

    There are various steel pipes - according to the manufacturing technology (welded and seamless), the characteristics of the protective coating (uncoated and galvanized), wall thickness and diameter. At the same time, it is often required in work to get several short ones from 1 long pipe. For this, a special tool is used - a pipe cutter for steel pipes.

    Models and prices

    The steel pipe cutter has different technical and user characteristics, which ultimately affects its price. The table provides an overview of some manual models with their parameters and prices.

    Steel pipe cutter - device and principle of operation

    This device is the most the best remedy for precise cutting of pipes at right angles.

    The simplest steel pipe cutter consists of the following elements:

    • Cutting roller, which can be different types depending on the characteristics of the pipe to be cut.
    • Latch for rigid attachment of the roller to the frame and housing for its placement.
    • The frame is the base in which the roller is placed.
    • Feed handle - with its help, the pipe is rotated and cut.

    The device is shown schematically in the figure below (disassembled).

    The steel pipe cutter works by using the mechanical force of rotation of the feed screw. The pipe is fixed in the frame and secured with clamps on both sides. The screw starts to rotate, as a result of which a groove is formed in the pipe wall, which deepens until the pipe is completely cut off. In this case, the screw of pipe cutters with one roller is rotated a full revolution (360 degrees), and devices with 4 rollers are twisted by 120 degrees, since each of them cuts off its own piece of pipe.

    IMPORTANT. In some cases, special metal hacksaws are used to cut pipes. This is especially useful when you just need to get 2 or more fragments from one piece. However, if straight edges and a right angle are required (this is especially true for subsequent threading), then a pipe cutter for steel pipes is the only tool that can do the job.

    Scope of application

    The device is used for mechanical cutting of pipes made of any materials (steel, copper, cast iron, ceramics, plastic, metal-plastic). However, in most cases it only cuts pipes from a specific material (although there are devices that can cope with both steel and plastic pipes).

    At the same time, some pipe cutters make a cut exclusively at right angles, while others are able to cope with any cuts (mainly from 45 to 90 degrees).

    IMPORTANT. Pipe cutters of any kind are used only for cutting round classic pipes and are not suitable for working with shaped pipes... The reason is that the design of their mechanism involves the execution of rotational movements around the surface of the pipe. The profile has a square and rectangular shape, so it is cut using a grinder or a hacksaw for metal.

    Views

    Types of pipe cutters are classified depending on the objects to be cut and the characteristics of the cutting element. Accordingly, the following types of tools are distinguished:

    Video instruction: on working with a pipe cutter.

    Often to pipe cutters different types add-ons are offered to provide the safest piping environment. So, with the help of the fast swaging mechanism, large pipes can be quickly fixed in the device without the use of a special screw. Also, the pipe cutter can be equipped with additional removable cutting elements oriented to pipes of various thicknesses and rollers that move the device around the pipe.

    Pipe cutting methods

    Pipe cutters for steel pipes have different technical designs (in the form handheld devices, machine tools, automatic mechanisms) depending on several factors:

    • parameters of the pipe to be cut (wall thickness and outer diameter are taken into account);
    • the required cutting accuracy (especially important for the further use of pipes in water supply systems);
    • the quality of the pipe surface after cutting (a smooth surface is required in cases of further threading on the pipe);
    • production volumes (home conditions or industrial scale).

    Accordingly, the following methods of cutting steel pipes are distinguished:

    1. Laser cutting;
    2. Cutting on disk machines;
    3. Cutting with circular saws;
    4. Using professional cutting machines;
    5. Cutting on bandsaws.

    Laser cutting

    The steel pipe laser cutter is able to cut with a laser. At the same time, the pipe surface does not receive mechanical damage due to the lack of direct contact with cutting element... The tube is fixed with clamps on a special table (with the help of accessories), on which the laser head is located. The pipe is turned by a special mechanism, and the laser cuts the steel precisely according to predetermined parameters. In this case, it is possible not only to mechanically split the pipe into several parts, but also to cut out some elements in its body (for example, mesh, as shown in the figure below).

    The advantages of such production are obvious:

    • it is a safe way of cutting, since all work is automated;
    • it is quite simple to carry out them even for specialists with low qualifications;
    • the surface is cut perfectly evenly along the contour, there are no scratches and other mechanical defects;
    • you can make cuts of any size;
    • production is fast and waste-free (used for professional purposes).

    Disc cutting

    Perpendicular pipe cuts are made on it. At the same time, the product itself remains flat, which has great importance for further work with him. The machine can also make cuts at various angles (up to 45 degrees).

    Disc cutting video

    Cutting with circular saws

    A circular saw-based steel pipe cutter is used in cases where production volumes are small and the final product must have high quality... The circular saw cuts the pipe by turning it 360 degrees. In this case, you can get a cut at any angle.

    Hand and automatic circular saws are used. In this case, the latter make cuts an order of magnitude more accurate. Most often, this cutting method is used only at home.

    Video review of one of the circular saw models.

    Professional pipe cutters

    The pipe cutter for steel pipes, which is used for high-quality cutting, is a professional device with which you can cut pipes with any diameters (including large ones) and at almost any angle, depending on their further use. For this, the mechanism is equipped with clamps that adjust the position of the axis that rotates the knives. The disc that cuts metal is equipped with a special cap that protects it from mechanical stress and allows it to be used for a long time. At the same time, the set contains several discs with diameters from 1 to 12 cm (thickness up to 8 mm).

    At the same time, the efforts of the worker are minimal - often the devices are equipped with a special mechanical drive that starts the mechanism by simply pressing the pedal.

    The specifics of pipe cutting work can be seen here.

    Band saw cutting

    Such machines allow cutting rather large pipes (up to 32-34 cm in diameter) and work with high productivity, which allows them to be used in production.

    The advantages of the device are as follows:

    • high quality of the surface of the cut pipe (no burrs, roughness, edges are not melted);
    • incisions can be made both at right angles and at other angles (up to 6 degrees);
    • cutting exactly matches the initial parameters that are set in advance.

    Video review of the machine on the example of one of the models

    Manual cutting technology with a pipe cutter

    Regardless technical characteristics pipe cutter, the sequence of actions for cutting pipes with it will look about the same:

    IMPORTANT. It is not necessary to press the cutter roller into the pipe body with great force. This can damage it, causing the mechanism to have to be replaced with a new one.

    Instrument care

    The service life of a tool largely depends not only on compliance with the basic rules for working with it, but also on proper care... Compliance with the rules presented below will significantly extend the life of the device and ensure high-quality cutting of pipes with its help.

    NOTE. Working on an instrument that contains even slight visual damage is undesirable. The fact is that the wear of the pipe cutter will go much faster this way, as a result of which the cut quality will be greatly reduced.

    How to choose the right device

    To choose the most suitable steel pipe cutter for you, you need to proceed from the following parameters:

    • What quality of cut will be acceptable (surface roughness, burrs, degree of fusion of the edges).
    • How important is the cutting speed (depends on the total volume of pipe production).
    • What are the parameters of the pipes with which you mainly have to work.
    • What skills does the worker have to carry out manual cutting.

    IMPORTANT. If the steel pipe cutter is not chosen correctly, this can lead not only to damage to the workpiece and the device itself, but also to serious injury. The choice of a tool must be approached very responsibly, since such a purchase is made for a long time. In this case, the price factor should come in last place: the main requirement is the full compliance of the instrument with the purpose for which it is purchased.

    Making a pipe cutter with your own hands

    If for some reason it is not possible to purchase a professional device, then it is quite possible to make it yourself from conventional materials available to almost everyone. The advantages of this option are as follows:

    • such a device will cost less than a store one;
    • it can be adapted specifically to your needs (cutting pipes of specified parameters);
    • while making it, you can learn new things and gain valuable experience that will be useful in other areas.

    NOTE. At the same time, before starting work, you must immediately decide which pipes will be cut. what materials they will be made of (the pipe cutter is not a universal tool - there are pipe cutters only for metal or plastic; devices for universal use are much less common).

    What you need to work

    To make a tool yourself, you need a small set of tools and materials:

    • set of wrenches;
    • screwdrivers;
    • hacksaw for metal work;
    • square wire rod;
    • spring;
    • hacksaw blades.

    Also, in the work you will need a bolt and screws of special sizes, which depend on the parameters of the device itself. Metal rivets are selected in standard sizes (diameter 0.4 cm).

    The sequence of work is associated with the stages of manufacturing the left (1), right half (3) of the tool and their assembly. An example drawing is shown below.

    Number 2 denotes blade trims, 4 - clamping screw. Dimensions are in millimeters and can be proportionally recalculated for your specific model.

    Video with an example of making a chain homemade pipe cutter for steel pipes.

    It is not entirely economical to purchase a pipe cutter for each specific job. Option make a device with your own hands quite acceptable, especially if you have the skills of a locksmith and a welder.

    DIY Crafts, in order of difficulty

    In a domestic environment, to obtain a high-quality cut, they are often used roller pipe cutters... The design is not very complex and you can make them yourself... Pipes large in size and name of materials are processed by hand-made chain cutter.

    If it is necessary to cut a large number of pipes, it is advisable to have powered device made by yourself. Purchased, especially good quality from foreign firms is not cheap. Here you can offer a grinder as an electric drive and develop an electric pipe cutter (circular saw) on its basis. Other types of drives- hydraulic, pneumatic and others at home to modify and even more so to develop is impossible or very difficult and only within the power of especially gifted craftsmen.

    Homemade tools for cutting steel pipes and more, video

    Introducing possible options DIY production of roller, chain and electric pipe cutters.

    Roller for steel and copper pipes with a diameter of up to 40 mm

    • the main element of the design is the cutting roller, it is purchased, as it is made of special steel with a certain sharpening angle;
    • steel strip 5 mm thick, 30 mm wide. and a length of about 500 mm .;
    • increased (high) M12 nut;
    • standard nut М12;
    • standard nut М16;
    • steel bar with a diameter of 20 mm, a length of at least 60 mm;
    • M12 bolt with a threaded length of 200 mm. the entire length of the rod;
    • Bulgarian;
    • locksmith tools and accessories.

    The order of work is as follows.

    • First of all pipe cutter body is manufactured... It is welded from strips of steel sheet 5 mm thick. and a width of 30 mm., into which the workpiece was cut with a grinder.
    • The body is the supporting part for all structural elements of the pipe cutter, therefore welds must have good strength characteristics. Why it is necessary to clean and adjust the surfaces to be welded before welding.
    • Prepare a hole for the axis of rotation support rollers and cutting tools. By the way, in this video, the author forgot to mention this structural element. The diameter of this steel bar must correspond to the inner diameter of the cutting roller, and for unification under the same diameter, a hole must be made in the support rollers.
    • At pen making, which will be used as part of the clamping device and the lever to rotate the pipe cutter, it is important to choose a convenient diameter and length for work. An M16 hairpin for cutting small diameter pipes may not be useful.
    • Finished pipe cutter after painting has a good presentation.

    Chain for products with a diameter of up to 76 mm

    The pipe cutter is positioned by the author as a device for processing pipes up to a diameter of 76 mm. The pipe material is not specified. Probably additional features will appear after testing. For the manufacture of a pipe cutter you will need the following materials:

    • a piece of an old chain from an electric hoist;
    • industrial hardened tool steel cutting rollers;
    • studs M6, depending on the number of chain links;
    • M6 nuts are twice the number of studs;
    • two steel strips 10 mm thick, 40 mm wide. and a length of about 350 mm;
    • plates with a thickness of 10 mm, dimensions 40 x 60 mm. - 4 things. (2 pcs. - for the manufacture of fastening the ends of the chain, 2 pcs. - for the clamping device;
    • chain links that will be used as elements of the power section of the pipe cutter structure;
    • bolt М16, the length is selected to ensure normal conditions for tightening the chain;
    • nut М16;
    • plate 2-3 mm thick, 40 x 40 mm in size;
    • a set of fasteners in the form of studs, nuts, M8 washers, M10 bolt, M10 nut, washers for M10 thread;
    • welding machine with electrodes;
    • chain disassembly device, another set of locksmith tools.

    For the manufacture of a chain pipe cutter you need to do the following.

    • Disassemble the old chain o t of the electric hoist into its component parts: links and pins. A device, as the author calls it, "crocodile", is used to knock out fingers.
    • To secure the collapsible chain to the finger ends studs M6 are welded... The chain is assembled into a single whole using M6 nuts and washers.
    • Steel strip levers equipped with a mount for the ends of the chain. At the ends of the strips, plates 10 mm thick with dimensions of 40 x 60 mm are welded. Links are welded to the plates to provide a landing clearance for the ends of the chain. It should be noted that appearance welds leaves great doubts about their sufficient strength during operation... Preparation of surfaces for welding (cleaning, selection of modes) leaves much to be desired.
    • In one of the stripes two holes with a diameter of 10 mm are made.: one in the middle, the other at the end opposite to the chain attachment;
    • In a different strip besides the hole in the middle, an emphasis is made from the remnants of plates 10 mm thick. by welding;
    • To assembled scissor-shaped plates the tensioner is mounted consisting of an M16 bolt, an M16 nut and a washer that limits the movement of the levers in the form of a plate.
    • The ends of the chain are inserted into the gaps between the links at the ends of the strips and are attached with studs, nuts and M8 washers. The position of the cutting rollers in one cutting plane is adjusted with intermediate washers.
    • The appearance of the pipe cutter is clearly unpresentable, however, the use of more advanced technological methods can significantly improve the appearance and quality of the structure. The algorithm of actions is indicated.

    Electric pipe cutter, circular saw from a grinder

    Grinder-based pipe cutting device can be crafted from the following materials and equipment:

    • a grinder used for various household tasks;
    • steel sheet with a thickness of 4-5 mm .;
    • corners 30, 40 mm.;
    • square tube 20 x 20 mm .;
    • tension-compression spring with hook ends;
    • fasteners, among which there are grinders that match the thread on the holes;
    • steel bar with a diameter of 10-12 mm. for the axis of rotation;
    • welding machine with electrodes.

    Necessary perform the following works.

    • Make from 4-5 mm sheet, corners and square pipe table for placing the processed labor b. Fix on it a device for clamping and turning pipes during processing.
    • To the table weld the rack, made from a corner of 30 mm. Pre-make a hole in the rack with a diameter of 10-12 mm. for the axis of rotation. Weld on the plate to secure one end of the spring.
    • From the corner 40 mm. weld the pipe, which is aligned with the rack on the axis of rotation.
    • Weld bracket made of sheet material, which in shape will fit the mounting surface of the grinder. Provide holes on it for mounting this electric drive. Make holes for spring hook.
    • Weld the bracket to the square tube from the corner of 40 mm. Position and fix the grinder on the bracket.
    • It turned out enough compact device easy to find storage space. If necessary, it will help in the processing of pipes with a smooth cut.

    A piece of pipe can be cut in many ways, be it a hacksaw, a grinder, but at the same time the cut may not turn out very even, and sometimes it is quite critical. For a smoother cut, pipe cutters are used that are very expensive if the diameters of the pipes that you plan to cut with them are large enough, from 40 mm and more. But you can make such a tool yourself without spending a lot of money on it, since we will make a pipe cutter from a chain and a piece of a square pipe and a couple of other parts that you probably have in your garage with a surplus. You only have to spend money on a cutting roller for a pipe cutter, this is a consumable, so they are sold separately in stores. With such a pipe cutter, you can cut both steel, copper, duralumin as well as pipes from PVC plastic... Plus, such a tool works quietly and does not need electricity for its work.

    What is needed to create a pipe cutter:

    • Square steel profile;
    • A piece of chain from a motorcycle;
    • Cut-off roller for a factory pipe cutter;
    • Sheet metal strips 5-7 mm thick;
    • Bolt with nut;
    • A piece of steel pipe (sleeve).

    How to make a pipe cutter from a chain and a profile, the manufacturing process:

    To begin with, we make holders for the cut-off roller, for this we drill holes in the strips of sheet metal, but I already had ready-made such fasteners.

    We assemble the holder, for this we put the roller between the fasteners and tighten them with a bolt and nut.

    Then you need to weld one end of the chain to the handle.

    Now we weld a piece of hairpin to the second end of the chain.

    Then you need to weld to the end of the handle a piece of a round sleeve through which the hairpin should move freely.

    That's it, we select a nut for the stud and our do-it-yourself chain pipe cutter is ready!

    Now it remains to test it, for this we place the hairpin in the bushing and screw the nut onto it.

    We grip the pipe in a vice, put the pipe cutter on the pipe and tighten the nut, then simply turn the pipe cutter by the handle around the pipe gradually tighten with each turn wrench nut on the pipe cutter and then scroll the tool around the pipe until the piece of pipe is completely cut off.
