    Step-by-step instructions for creating a machine

    Stage 1. The choice of the electric motor. An old washing machine engine will do. Remove pulleys, belt and electrical parts from equipment. It is desirable to give preference to an asynchronous single-phase electric motor of 200-300 W, 1500-2000 rpm.

    How to make a belt sander

    The motor for belt sander is easy to find and can be removed from a used washing machine. The bed will have to be made independently, for this you can use a sheet of metal with dimensions of 500x180x20 mm. One side of the bed should be cut very evenly, since it will be necessary to attach a platform to which the electric motor will be mounted. The platform for the electric motor should also be made of a sheet of metal with dimensions of 180x160x10 mm. Such a platform must be secured to the bed very securely with a few bolts.

    The efficiency of a belt sander directly depends on the characteristics of the electric motor that is installed on it. If you are going to make a grinding machine with your own hands, then an electric motor with a power of 2.5-3 kW, which develops about 1500 rpm, is quite suitable for you. In order for the sanding belt to move at a speed of 20 m / s when using such a motor, the drums must have a diameter of the order of 200 mm. What is convenient, if you choose a motor with such characteristics, then you do not need to make a gearbox for your grinding machine.

    The drive shaft is directly connected to the motor shaft, and the second, the driven shaft, must rotate freely on the axis, which is installed in the bearing assemblies. In order for the abrasive belt to touch the surface of the workpiece more smoothly, the section of the bed on which the driven shaft is installed should be made with a slight bevel.

    It is possible to make shafts for a belt sander with minimal financial costs from a chipboard plate. Just cut square blanks 200x200 mm in size from such a plate, drill central holes in them and put them on the axis with a package with a total thickness of 240 mm. After that, you just have to grind the resulting package and make a round shaft with a diameter of about 200 mm out of it.

    For small volumes of grinding, the need for which arises from time to time, many craftsmen use hand-made ones. As an abrasive tool in such devices, as a rule, belts and discs made of abrasive paper and cloth are used. In addition to grinding wood, metals and plastics, such homemade products can be used to sharpen locksmith and carpentry tools, as well as to edit lathes and drills. Some homemade grinding machines have very simple design, and they can be assembled and disassembled as needed. Others are in many ways similar to industrial designs and are excellent examples of amateur engineering creativity. Power tools (usually drills and grinders) are mounted on removable clamps or brackets. Their motors operate at higher speeds, so it is advisable to use models with this parameter adjustment in grinding machines.

    The rotational speed of the drive is the most important characteristic of a home-made machine, since it is used to calculate the diameter of the drive pulley that transmits the rotation of the sanding belt. Each type of abrasive belt is designed to operate at a specific linear speed, which is measured in m / s, and its operating speed is equal to the peripheral speed of the drive pulley. Therefore, in the presence of an electric motor with known characteristics, the design of a grinding machine should begin with determining its diameter.

    In addition, according to the length of the sanding belt and the diameters of the pulleys and rollers, their center-to-center distances are calculated and the overall size of the future grinding machine is determined.

    Frame device

    The frame (bed) of the grinding machine is a supporting structure on which the electric drive, pulleys and rollers are mounted. The normal movement of the sanding belt, as well as the stability of the machine, depends on its rigidity and manufacturing accuracy. The contours of the bed usually follow the kinematic scheme of the rollers, which are located at its extreme points. Further, its construction will be considered using the example homemade device made of wood and plywood, in which an electric drill is used as a drive.     The frame of the machine is a box-type structure, inside which there is a drive pulley and two rollers. It consists of a curly sidewall of a broken C-shape, installed on a wide base. Thick plywood is used as material for all parts of this sander. On the lower lip of the frame, there is a work table with a slot for a sanding belt. The drive pulley is mounted on the vertical part of the frame, the guide pulley is at the end of the lower one, and the tension and regulating pulley is at the upper end. The same curly sidewall is hinged in the form of a door and completely covers the entire space with a pulley and rollers.

    The undoubted advantage of this homemade belt sander is that all its parts are manufactured simple tool in a carpentry workshop, and during the assembly a minimum of types of fasteners and metal components were used. Apparently, the master spent no more than two days to make it.

    From a safety point of view, the solution to completely close the rollers and belt looks just perfect. And the significant disadvantages of this machine include only a small range of belt tension.

    Roller mounting

    Factory and DIY belt sanders typically use two to four different sized rollers. One of them is always a pulley on the drive shaft and transmits the movement to the sanding belt. Another one acts as a tensioner (sometimes it combines this function with axial regulation). The rest are guides and can also have adjustments. One of the most common is the three-roller grinder design. In this case, each of them performs one of three functions. In this configuration, with the vertical arrangement of the working part of the sanding belt, a tension roller is located at the top, and a guide at the bottom.

    After installing the pulley and rollers on the machine frame, they must be adjusted. During operation, the sanding belt moves at a speed of 10 to 30 m / s, and any deviation in the geometry of the relative position of the pulley and rollers can cause it to come off and break. Therefore, their axes should be set strictly parallel to the horizontal, and the planes of rotation along which the tape moves should clearly coincide vertically. The possibility of such adjustments should be provided when developing the design of a belt sander.

    The simplest device among homemade products used by folk craftsmen is a disc sander driven by a drill. Most often, it is just a drill fixed with a clamp on a board with a factory or homemade drill. And as a work table in such homemade products, a piece of board or a stack of plywood is used. The main advantage of such structures is the ability to quickly assemble and disassemble them, or even make anew.

    However, there are also more complex designs: with a movable work table or a movable support in which the drill is fixed. Thick plywood or wood is always used as a material for the manufacture of home-made disc grinders, and the assembly is done with screws and glue.

    Insofar as different materials grind at different speeds, in such devices it is recommended to use drills with adjustable speed of rotation or conventional drills with dimmers.

    Usually, the frame on which the drill is mounted is a rectangular piece of board with a device for fastening it. As a fixing device, either a metal bracket is usually used, with which its body is pressed, or a wooden clamp with two semicircular recesses, covering the drill by the neck, intended for attaching the side handle. Another option is to place the drill in a wooden box, in the front wall of which a hole is cut to fit its neck. In this case, it is fixed with a strap, which is screwed to the ends of the side walls. For additional fastening and placement of the drill in height, short bars and plywood plates are used. Most often, a work table for such a homemade grinding machine is a simple structure of three rectangular pieces of plywood or chipboard with a slot for a disc, although some craftsmen make movable and inclined tables.

    Disc design

    As a grinding tool in homemade machines with a drill drive, disc-shaped nozzles with a cylindrical shank are usually used. Many people make such a tool on their own with disks of the size they need from plywood or plastic. Others use factory-made soft-padded discs when fine sanding or polishing is required, or not when the machine is used for roughing or rough sanding, and for sharpening and dressing tools.

    The abrasive paper is fixed to the factory attachments using a standard Velcro. It is attached to homemade ones with glue.

    Pulling the tape onto the drum, you need to make sure that the seam does not cling to the material to be processed during operation, but slides along it. That is, the tape connection should lie in the direction of travel, and not opposite.

    How to make a sander? For the bed, it is better to choose a metal sheet, the minimum dimensions of which are 500x180x20 mm. The larger the dimensions of the working surface, the more convenient and more different parts can be processed. It is important to process the side of the bed, to which the platform with the electric motor will be attached, very evenly.

    • Make 20x20 cm squares from chipboard sheets.
    • Make a 24 cm stack from the sawn squares.
    • Cut out a disc with a diameter of 20 cm from the bag folded in this way. When making drums, it must be borne in mind that the diameter of the outer part should be 2-3 mm less than the diameter of the central part. This will ensure that the tape is centered on the drum.

    The width of the sanding belt should be 200 mm in accordance with the width of the drums.

    For its manufacture, you can take emery strips, carefully gluing them together. Tarpaulin can be used as a good base.

    To prevent the tape from slipping while driving, it is recommended to cover the drums with rubber. For example, you can use cameras for a moped or a bicycle. The desired height of the rubber layer should be 3 cm.

    Drum machine design

    Manufacturing should begin with a study of the design features of this type of equipment. The drum-type grinding machine is designed for processing wooden surfaces, their alignment and deburring.

    The device belongs to the type of surface grinders for wood, which perform the function of calibration. There are many models and types of equipment. But the main task before making the unit with your own hands is the choice of the optimal design. The best option is a detailed acquaintance with factory analogs and drawing up a manufacturing scheme based on the data obtained.

    Structurally, the machine should consist of the following components:

    • frame. The main parts of the equipment are attached to it;
    • power unit. Most often, an asynchronous electric motor is installed for this;
    • grinding drum. It is important to choose the right diameter, the way of removing the shavings. With your own hands, you can make a base on which an emery tape is installed. Or order a cylindrical head with a cutting edge from a professional turner. It all depends on the type of work;
    • a device for changing the frequency of the motor shaft;
    • Desktop. The workpiece will be located on it. Experts recommend making this component from fiberglass when making a machine with your own hands;

    Additionally, drum grinding equipment can provide a mechanism for removing dust and chips from the processing area. It is also recommended to make a work table with a variable height relative to the snare drum. This will allow you to process part of the end of the wooden blank.

    If it is necessary to grind the outer or inner plane of the board, the drum should be placed horizontally. In this case, the possibility of its height adjustment is provided.

    Types of drum grinding machines

    • surface grinding. Machining is carried out in one plane. Can be used as an example for self-production;
    • circular grinding. Designed for processing cylindrical surfaces. For this, the package includes several nozzles with different diameters;
    • planetary. With their help, a flat plane is formed on products with a large area.

    For a complete set of a small home workshop, surface grinding models are most often chosen. They are distinguished by their simple design, availability of components and relatively fast production.

    In addition to leveling, drum sander can remove paint or varnish layers. They are used for restoration old furniture or do-it-yourself wooden interior parts.

    Self-made grinding machine

    The simplest model of a do-it-yourself machine is a drill that is mounted on a bed. Grinding cylinders are machined from wood and attached to their surface sandpaper with the required grain size.

    But this design has little functionality. For processing medium volumes, it is recommended to make equipment for wood according to a different principle. First of all, you need to choose the right power unit. Most often, an electric motor with a power of up to 2 kW and a speed of up to 1500 rpm is used. These requirements are met by asynchronous models that can be taken from old household appliances - washing machine or a vacuum cleaner.

    The procedure for making a homemade machine.

    1. Frame. It must be stable enough. Therefore, it is made from sheet steel with a thickness of 1.5 mm or more. Alternatively, you can consider 10 mm plexiglass.
    2. The motor is installed so that the shaft is in a vertical plane.
    3. Drum for processing. If you plan to perform only grinding work, an abrasive belt is installed on it. For deeper processing, you will need to make a steel taper with a cutting edge.
    4. Desktop. It is located at the top of the diagram. It is recommended to make it adjustable with respect to a stationary cylinder.
    5. Control block. In do-it-yourself designs, it is rarely possible to adjust the engine speed. Therefore, the block will consist of buttons for turning the unit on and off.

    Homemade machine
