• What can be cooked from squid: quick and tasty

    What progress has reached: devices have appeared on the market that can prevent uncontrolled snow from falling off the roofs - snow holders! It seems that the problem that worries many in winter has been resolved, but now questions have arisen: what kind of devices are these and how to install these snow protectors on metal tiles, which, by the way, cover most modern Russian roofs in the private sector and summer cottages.

    Why do you need snow stops, or snow barriers, on the roof

    The metal tile has a slippery surface, so the snow, having accumulated, easily rolls off it, you just have to melt the lower layer and turn into ice. The main reason for the need to install snow guards on a metal roof is to ensure safety. An avalanche of snow with an ice crust descends at the most unexpected moment, and God forbid you to be near! Owners of private houses are aware of other situations related to the problem of snow retention:

    • Snow that has slid from the roof can create a huge snowdrift in the yard, fill up all the entrances and exits. If the day before it was planned to come to work on time, then, alas, this morning will have to be devoted to laying a tunnel from the door to the gate;
    • in old buildings, baths and sheds are located on the border of the plots. The descent of heavy snow from their roofs onto neighboring bushes and trees can cause many years of civil strife;
    • An avalanche of snow can cause material damage to the owners themselves: to crush a car parked nearby, damage gutters, break plantations overwintering nearby, demolish a fence, etc.

    And snow holders can protect us from such a destructive force, if, of course, they are chosen and installed correctly.

    Snow guards on a metal roof can help prevent many problems

    Types of snow holders for metal tiles

    There are two main groups of snow retention devices.

    Throughput

    Such snow stops partially let the snow through. They can be installed in regions where a lot of snow accumulates on the roofs during the winter. Snow guards belong to this category:

    The grilles look nice, but they are inferior in strength to the pipes.

    Barrier (planks)

    These devices keep snow out - it lies on the roof until it melts. They can be mounted on roofs in regions with little snow cover. The category of barrier includes snow holders:

    There are also drag snow holders, or point ones, popularly called hooks. They are optional and cannot hold the snow themselves. The towbars are installed over the entire roof surface in a checkerboard pattern. Their peculiarity is also in the fact that they are mounted at the stage of roofing, the strips are masked as sheets. If you need reliable snow guards for an already finished metal roof, then this is not your option.

    Snow bars are mounted at the stage of roofing

    Preparation for the installation of snow guards

    First of all, take care of your safety: prepare a reliable ladder or stepladder, and when working on a roof that is too steep, a safety rope will not interfere.

    Required tools

    You will need a mounting kit:

    Products galvanized and with a polymer coating cannot be cut with a grinder, since these surfaces are heated and destroyed. In the future, in such places, corrosion of the exposed metal will begin.

    Lines along which snow guards will be attached

    First, you need to mark the lines for attaching the snow holders to the metal tile:

    • the first row of snow holders is installed above the load-bearing wall. On both sides of the ramp, mark the points above it and pull the cord along the level;
    • a second row of snow guards is required if the length of the slope is more than 5.5 m. Mark points 2-3 m above the first line and pull on the second cord;
    • additional rows are made over protruding surfaces: roof windows, doors, vents, etc. For them, points are also marked with an indent upward by 20 cm and the cords are pulled.

    Mounting options for snow guards: above the load-bearing wall, above and between the windows

    Rules and schemes for fastening supports of tubular, lattice and log devices for snow retention

    These types of snow guards have differences in assembly, since they have different barriers, but they all have supports (pillars) that are attached to the roof according to the same principles:

    Preparation for fastening the supports (marking)

    Following all the above rules, mark the points of attachment of the supports along the stretched cord:

    Now you can start installation.

    Correct installation of different types of snow stops

    Depending on the type, the technology for mounting snow holders on metal tiles will be slightly different.

    Tubular

    Sample kit for a tubular snow guard:

    • supports - 4 pcs. for a 3-meter pipe;
    • pipes;
    • self-tapping screws for fastening supports;
    • bolts and nuts for joining pipes;
    • rubber gaskets;
    • stubs.

    Installation steps:

    1. Screw on the supports at the points already marked and drilled. The gaskets are placed between the support and the roof: at the top point - one, at the bottom - two.
      There is one gasket under the upper mount, two under the lower (in the background)
    2. Insert the snow guard pipes into the holes of the brackets.
      Pipes are inserted into the holes of the supports
    3. Connect the pipes of the adjacent snow guards using the bolts and nuts from the kit.
      Joining of pipes of adjacent snow holders in a line is done using bolts and nuts
    4. If necessary, cut off excess pipes with a jigsaw or a metal hacksaw.
    5. If there are plugs in the kit, insert them into the ends of the outer tubes.

    Lattice

    In the kit you need to have:

    • lattice;
    • supports;
    • brackets for attaching the grilles to the supports;
    • bolts with nuts;
    • washers.

    This differs from the previous method only in the assembly of the snow holder. There are several options:

    • the simplest one, when the support is also a holder (bracket) at the same time, as is the case with a tubular one;
    • the lattice is attached to the support using an additional part - a bracket;
    • the support and the bracket are separate parts.

    Assembling a grate snow guard from three parts:

    During installation, work will be added, but the structure will be stronger, more resistant to bending.

    The gratings of the two snow holders are connected with overlapping bolts or with a special strip, as in the diagram.

    Log cabins

    The kit includes:

    • racks (supports);
    • log;
    • self-tapping screws.

    A snow holder, stylized as a log, is mounted in the same way as a tubular one, with a small difference: not two tubes are inserted into the holder-holder, but one of a larger diameter. In addition, the logs do not fit into each other, but are installed close to the minimum gaps.

    There is a difference in the design of the supports: it can be hinges, as in the photo above, and hooks. In the second case, the log is placed on supports, the installation is simplified.

    Hooks serve as supports, and the log is real here

    Corner

    The corner snow stop has a very simple design and a complete set. In addition to the corner and self-tapping screws, the set often includes a reinforcing plate, it is inserted inside and serves as an additional stiffener.

    Corner with reinforcing plate

    Features of installing corner snow holders:

    • there are no supports and brackets, the corner is screwed directly to the roof.
    • the corners are installed in several continuous rows or separately in a checkerboard pattern. As with other types of snow guards, the first line should run over the load-bearing wall.
      Snow stops are staggered
    • the corner is attached to the crests of the metal tiles. As a rule, it rests against the front step (relief).
    • the front side of the corner facing the ridge should make a right angle with the roof surface.
      The side of the corner facing the roof ridge must be at right angles to the roof
    • the front bar is attached first long screws so that they reach the crate. The lower (rear) strip is screwed to the roof with short self-tapping screws.
      The front plank is screwed to the lathing, the rear plank is screwed to the roof, you can also see where the reinforcing plank is placed

    What are the most common mistakes during installation

    The main reason for all the problems when installing snow guards on a roof made of metal tiles is the desire to save both money when buying a snow retention system and time during its installation. Typical mistakes:

    There are several modifications within each category of snow guards. They differ in design, assembly and fastening methods, so before buying, read the instructions for a particular device. And do not forget the principles of installing the supports themselves.

    The main purpose of the roof is to protect the building from atmospheric precipitation and give it a complete look from the point of view of aesthetics.

    At the same time, the roof must remain safe even in heavy snowfalls and during thaws, when there is a high probability of accumulated snow melting and icicles falling.

    Snow retention on a metal roof is carried out with the help of artificial barriers on the accumulation of snow on the eaves of the roof.

    The need to install snow guards stems from the climatic features of most regions of the country, where in winter there is a significant amount of precipitation in the form of snow. Even the absolutely smooth surface of the metal tile cannot prevent the formation of snow caps on the roofs.

    After the thickness of the snow crust on the roof reaches a certain value, there is a danger of its collapse... If at this moment there is a person or a car under the cut of the roof, possible serious injury and damage... An even greater danger is represented by icicles that appear on the cut of the roof from the snow that has accumulated there and has begun to melt.

    You can avoid such risks by installing snow catchers - special fences placed on the roof. Their design allows them to withstand the weight of even the most powerful layer of snow, preventing it from falling sharply down. In the future, this snow can either be removed, or wait for its gradual thawing under the sun's rays.

    Snow holders provide protection against icicle formation by keep the underside of the roof free of snow... Due to this, the flowing water partly evaporates during the thaw, and partly freezes onto the metal tile, without accumulating in the thickness of the snow and without forming hanging icicles.

    In addition, snow guards perform a number of additional functions:

    • provide roof cleaning safety from snow;
    • protect from falling sheets of metal tiles during roof repairs or in a hurricane wind;
    • prevent clogging drainage system.

    Snow stoppers are installed both along the eaves of the roof and above the dormer windows, points, etc. How to install snow guards on metal tiles? Before proceeding directly with the installation, you need to decide on the choice of a snow retention system.

    Types of snow holders

    In construction practice, most often used snow guards of the following types:

    The listed types are also divided into two groups: throughput and barrier. The former are able to gradually let snow through themselves and melt water(lattice, pipe, yokes). The latter do not have this ability (snow-retention corners and logs).

    Choosing the most suitable type depends on climatic conditions as well as from design features existing roof: area, angle of inclination, strength.

    How to attach snow guards to metal tiles?

    The installation of snow holders on a metal roof begins with the choice of the type of snow holders. However, the list necessary materials and tools will be about the same:

    • set of snow retention elements;
    • screwdriver;
    • keys 8 mm;
    • jigsaw or hacksaw for metal.

    metal roof snow holders

    It is strongly not recommended to use a grinder for cutting material.... In most cases, metal snow retention systems have a protective polymer coating similar to that of the coating.

    Cutting with a grinder involves the use of a cutting disc rotating at high speed, which leads to melting and destruction of the protective layer on protective pipes, corners or gratings. In the future, during the operation of the roof, corrosion will begin from these places, reducing the mechanical strength of the structure.

    Fastening tubular systems

    Tubular snow guards for metal tiles are supplied in the form of kits which include the following:

    • snow pipe;
    • fixing brackets(fastening snow holders to metal tiles);
    • screws 8 × 50 mm;
    • gaskets 7 and 14 mm.

    The number of rows of snow retention will depend on the length of the roof slope. If it is less than 5 meters, then one row will be enough.

    On longer slopes, a second row of pipes is installed, located 3 meters higher than the first.

    How to properly install snow guards on metal tiles?

    To begin with, the bottom row of pipe holders is mounted above the load-bearing wall of the house. In this case, the distance to the cut of the roof must be at least 40 cm, which corresponds to the second or third row of shingles.

    NOTE!

    It is not allowed to install snow guards on the eaves. In addition to the fact that this will lead to the loss of the ability of the snow holder to perform its functions, the destruction of the roof itself is also possible.

    Installation of snow guards on metal tiles: instructions and tips.

    1. installation of snow guards on metal tiles begins with the installation of brackets. At a distance of at least 300 mm from the side cut of the roof, holes are drilled for the first bracket. To mark the attachment points, the bracket is placed on the metal tile in such a way that its upper end rests against the cut of the previous row of stamped tiles. In this case, under the surface of the metal tile should be located, which will take on the entire load;
    2. a waterproofing gasket of 7 mm is applied to the upper hole, and 14 mm to the lower one. The difference in the height of the spacers allows you to compensate for the height difference arising from the profile of the metal tile;
    3. the bracket is installed and screwed on;
    4. at a distance of no more than 1100 mm the second bracket is attached in the same way, and so on;
    5. a snow retention pipe is threaded through the holes in the brackets. The maximum extension of the free end from the extreme bracket should not exceed 300 mm;
    6. if it is necessary to increase the length of the pipes, they are interconnected and fixed with self-tapping screws for metal;
    7. side sections of pipes are sealed... This is done either by flattening the ends, or by installing sealed plugs.

    fixing brackets

    CAREFULLY!

    It must be understood that the installation of snow guards on a metal tile in some cases may void the manufacturer's warranty... Therefore, it is worthwhile to familiarize yourself with warranty conditions and use only snow retention kits recommended by the manufacturer.

    Lattice snow holders are attached in the same way.

    Installing the corner snow holder

    A corner snow retainer is placed above the load-bearing wall, where the mechanical strength of the roof is maximum. In practice, this is approximately corresponds to the second or third wave of metal tiles.

    The width of the corner corresponds to the length of one row of tiles. Its upper face will be the one that forms a right angle to the plane of the roof.

    Having installed the corner in a row of tiles, it is fixed with self-tapping screws. The main load will fall on the upper edge of the corner, therefore self-tapping screws 50-70 mm long are used to fasten it. Self-tapping screws of long length are necessary for reliable fixation to the wooden crate located directly under the metal tile.

    The lower edge of the corner can be fixed with shorter self-tapping screws. There are no such high loads here, plus the distance to the crate is large and it is necessary to attach only to the sheet of metal tile.

    installation of corner snow holders

    Installation of drag systems for snow retention

    Drag (point) are distributed evenly along the entire plane of the roof. The scheme of their placement is calculated in each case individually, since it is influenced by the features of the roof structure.

    Self-tapping screws are used to fasten the yokes. Sheets of metal tiles do not have sufficient strength to hold point snow protectors. Therefore, in the places of their attachment, wooden blocks are additionally applied to the crate compensating for the difference in height in the profile of the metal tile.

    Advantages and disadvantages

    The advantages of such systems include their high efficiency at minimum cost... Even the simplest options are able to protect people passing under the walls and cars standing there from icicles and avalanches.

    The disadvantages include only the risk of losing the manufacturer's warranty for the metal tile. In addition, the installation of additional equipment leads to the risk of damage to the protective coating. roofing material.

    The simplicity of the design of snow retention systems does not prevent them from successfully coping with the task of preventing snow from falling off the roof and the formation of icicles. The same feature allows you to independently establish such protection even for people without experience in construction.

    Useful video

    We present to your attention a video about self-installation snow holders:

    It is necessary to ensure safety from falling ice masses. They are needed not only so that, approaching the house, suddenly not end up in a snowdrift. During the thaw, a heavy and hard ice crust forms in the bottom layer of the ice sheet. At temperatures above zero, water appears under it. The connection with the base is lost, and there is a danger of a collapse. This is also facilitated by the fact that it warms up through the wall supporting structures rafter system and its sheathing. If there is a residential building in the building, heat is transferred to the outside more intensively. In the event of a fall, ice masses can cause a lot of harm, therefore, special barriers with stops that can withstand any loads are mounted on the roof.

    All about installing snow guards on metal tiles

    Barriers provide safety when repairing and cleaning surfaces. They trap branches and leaves, preventing the gutter from clogging. They are installed at some distance from the edge, leaving the lower edge free from a thick layer of precipitation. During a thaw, some of the water in this space evaporates. As a result, fewer icicles are formed, and their mass is not so great.

    Installation of snow holders on metal tiles can be done by hand. To carry out the work correctly, you must follow the instructions. It is included with the kit.

    Design and technical characteristics of barriers

    The products go well with classic and modern exteriors. You should choose a model not only for its appearance. One photo will not be enough for this. To accept correct solution, it is necessary to take into account the design, weight and other technical specifications.

    Types by principle of action

    • Passages - as the name suggests, they allow some of the snow and melt water to pass through. This method allows for unloading, while making it safe, but does not eliminate the need to clean its surface. Decoration Materials will last longer if freed from the corrosive ice crust that physically affects the finish and its fasteners.
    • Barrier - do not have a capacity.

    Types of systems by device

    • Tubular - consist of a metal pipe with a diameter of up to 3 cm. It is attached to the base with brackets. Such devices can be mounted on slopes with any slope. At large area they are installed in several tiers. To understand how many rows you need to put, you should take into account the climatic features of the region.
    • Lattice - instead of tubes, gratings are screwed to the brackets. Their bandwidth is lower. It depends on the size of the cell. As a rule, models are designed to allow only melt water to pass through. When ice breaks off from the coating, it will not be able to overcome such an obstacle.
    • Corner - represent a bent steel plate directed upward at an angle. Its edge, located on the side of the ridge and parallel to it, acts as a barrier. It is perpendicular to the base. The second edge facing the gutter is at the bottom and supports it. The plate has a protective coating made of paint and polymer materials.
    • Rope barriers - small fences that protect individual areas. They are used as an addition to the main lines of defense. Drag barriers are included in complex schemes or fixed in places where people can be.
    • Log cabins are a classic way that has not lost its relevance today. This design is inexpensive. It is a small rounded log on brackets. Before attaching such snow holders to metal tiles, it is necessary to clarify their mass. It is possible that they will turn out to be too heavy not only for covering, but also for rafters. The advantage of this method is that all parts can be made independently from available tools.
    It is better to order the coating and accessories from one manufacturer. This will allow you to achieve the correct color combination. Fasteners are made according to the standard, but they may differ slightly from different manufacturers, which sometimes makes installation difficult. Licensed production has been established in Russia.

    Calculation of the load of the number of rows

    The system increases the loads on the rafters and their sheathing. In order not to overload them, it is necessary to carry out a preliminary calculation that takes into account several important parameters.

    Load calculation parameters

    • Product weight and weight gain of the cover.
    • Slope angle.
    • Bearing capacity of the base.

    Calculation of the number of rows

    A reasonable question arises - why do we need fences for ordinary one-storey house in the middle lane? Indeed, in villages and towns, people have always done without roof fences. The answer is obvious - metal tiles have a smoother and more slippery surface than traditional materials. In addition, a thick layer of sediment has a constant effect on it, gradually sliding down and trying to displace it. With a small defect in the part, the protective polymer film is torn off. Moving ice can scratch paint. The fence helps to reduce stress and minimize movement.

    Usually one line is enough. In southern regions, where there is little rainfall in winter, devices are installed only where protection is needed. In cold climates, several tiers will be required. Engineering companies use special tables that show the dependence of the weight of the snow cover, typical for the region, on the slope of the slope and the distance between obstacles. In the middle lane, if the angle is more than 45 degrees, one line is required for every 6 m 2. With a smaller slope, the area increases to 9 m 2.

    With a slope length of more than 5 m, as a rule, more than one row is placed. The distance between them is 2.5-3.5 m. Only the part that does not go beyond the perimeter of the walls is taken into account. If the installation is carried out at the very edge, the edge will bend.

    Fastening snow holders to metal tiles

    Products are heavy. In addition, more precipitation will remain on the surface, which will significantly increase the load on the rafters. When building a house, the crate should be strengthened by nailing slats at the locations of the barriers. It is advisable to place the line above the wall. If the building has already been built, it is better to calculate the load-bearing capacity of its upper part.

    Tools for the job

    • Screwdriver or screwdriver.
    • Drill.
    • Kit wrenches... Typically an 8 mm wrench is used.
    • A hacksaw for metal or a jigsaw. not suitable for cutting. The products are covered with a protective film. The saw blade rotates at high speed. Because of this, it gets very hot and melts the polymer shell around the edges. With such damage, corrosion begins at the cut, which gradually spreads further, reducing the strength and stability of the entire system.

    Installation of tubular and lattice snow holders

    For good grip, the supplied fasteners are enough. Do not widen the mounting holes for thicker screws - this can damage the protective plastic film or paintwork.

    Standard kit

    • Pipes with a diameter of 15-30 mm.
    • Brackets.
    • Screws 8x50 mm.
    • Bolts, nuts and washers for joining metal elements.
    • Elastic rubber pads.

    Stages

    • Markings are made on the slope. A bracket is applied to the surface and marks are drawn along it. It should be located above the load-bearing wall or a thick beam to which the lathing is tied. It is most convenient to calculate the location of the barriers during the construction or repair of rafters. This will allow you to reinforce the frame in the right places. The upper end of the bracket should rest against the adjacent row of embossed trim. This piece is attached to the bottom of the wave between the crests. The minimum distance to the edge of the slope is 30 cm. Work starts from the corner.
    • Holes for screws are drilled according to the marking. The length of the drill is calculated so that it reaches the crate. A drill for metal should be used.
    • On the holes obtained, gaskets are placed above and below, then screws are inserted. A bracket is attached to them. The distance between the supports does not exceed 0.9 m.
    • Pipes are inserted into the profile. The free edge should not protrude beyond the holder by more than 30 cm. The sides can be shortened and extended using self-tapping screws.
    • The ends are closed with plugs or flattened so that moisture does not get inside.

    Before you install the snow holders on the metal tile with your own hands, you must read the warranty card from the manufacturer. As a rule, the installation of additional equipment will void the warranty. In addition, when drilling, the integrity of the prefabricated elements is compromised.

    For a quick instruction on how to properly install snow guards on metal tiles, see the video.

    Installation of lattice fences is carried out in the same way.

    Installation of corner systems

    Supports are placed over load-bearing walls or main beams. The width of the corner is equal to the outside of the row of tiles. Its sides are parallel to the ridge. The upper edge forms a right angle with the roof plane. It is installed over the beam. No such support is required for the underside.

    The top is fixed with self-tapping screws 5-7 mm long. They should go through the trim and reach the sheathing. The bottom is screwed to the finish. The base of the corner is located on the ridges of the steel embossed profile.

    Installation of drag barriers

    They are small corners that are evenly placed over the entire area. Usually they are staggered so that the lower tier covers the gaps of the upper one. The supports must not be placed on the ridge, otherwise they will crush it. Holes for self-tapping screws are drilled in the lower part of the embossed panel.

    The peculiarity of the system is that it is attached to the slats, which are pre-nailed to the crate. Without them, there is a risk of spoiling the finish.

    Often on the metal roof slopes you can see strange structures in the form of horizontal handrails or squares. It was the owners who put the snow holders on the metal tiles. The decision, at first glance, is illogical, because the gratings spoil appearance and prevent snow from melting. We will try to figure out what it is, and for what purposes they put snow catchers on metal tiles.

    Do you need snow guards on a metal roof

    It is clear that any additional structures on a thin metal roof only increase the load on the rafters and roof sheathing. Moreover, any snow retention system on a metal roof leads to an increase in the mass of snow and can lead to deformations. roofing.

    But, nevertheless, there are even requirements of SNiPs and GOSTs, obliging home owners to install snow protection on metal tiles. No matter how high the building is, what is important is that the roof is covered with a profiled steel sheet with a relatively smooth surface.

    Usually, according to the instructions for installing snow guards on a metal roof, only two basic reasons are indicated:

    • Protect roof overhangs of the roof and gutter system from deformation and breakage;
    • Protect the space around the building, exclude injury to people and animals, equipment and vehicles that are under the eaves of the roof.

    Important! Without snow holders, up to 40% of the snow charge can simultaneously come off the roof surface made of metal tiles.

    On the corrugated profile of metal tiles, snow can accumulate to a very large thickness. At the same time, the steel surface, heated from the inside by warm water vapor, due to the melted snow, can become very slippery at one moment. As a result, 300-1500 kg of snow in one second hits the overhang and falls down. At correct installation snow holders on the metal tile, the snow melts in small portions of several kilograms, which do not pose a particular danger.

    Snow retention device on a roof made of metal tiles

    It is known from practice that most of the snow cover accumulates in the lower part of the roof slope. The upper half is blown by the wind about three times as much, therefore there is less snow there, and the layer thickness is relatively small. Therefore, it is recommended to install the main part of the snow holders in the middle and lower part of the overhang.

    There are, of course, exceptions. For example, if a house under a metal tile is surrounded by tall trees, or the roof is shaded by dense buildings of neighbors, then it is best to choose a Dutch or Danish hip structure, or reduce the slope of the roof slope to the optimal 15 o.

    The upper part of the roof is built at a very large angle of inclination, the lower half of the slopes is laid at an angle of 10-12 degrees. Four centuries ago, the Dutch and Danes built safe roofs without any snow protectors, with streets a few meters wide. Today it is cheaper to install snow protectors on metal tiles, photo, than to rebuild the roof.

    Important! The number of snow guards depends on the size of the roof and the angle of the slope.

    The greater the distance from the ridge to the cornice and the steepness of the slope, the greater the number of elements must be installed on the metal tile.

    Layouts of snow holders on metal tiles

    The effectiveness of the use of snow-trapping elements is largely determined by the installation scheme of snow cutters on the roof plane. Before putting snow holders on metal tiles, experts recommend highlighting roof sections with ventilation pipes, hatches, windows, cuckoos, ladders. By virtue of their shape and size, superstructures can function as snow retainers without any additions.

    The most common way of attaching snow holders to metal tiles is considered to be a two-row chess system. With this arrangement, the snow cutters keep snow well in the most dangerous part of the roof, and at the same time do not create additional wind load on the overhangs.

    If the angle of inclination of the roof made of metal tiles is higher than 35 °, then you will need to install an additional row of snow holders directly in the ridge area.

    Types of snow holders for metal tiles

    In addition to the correct placement of snow cutters on the roof, the design of the element significantly affects the reliability and efficiency of the system for dealing with snow caps. Ideally, a snow guard should meet three requirements:

    • Do not create additional resistance to wind and rainwater flows. Sometimes you have to look for a way how to properly attach the snow guards to the metal tile, since the standard location on the roof creates a lot of noise;
    • Withstand pressure from significant snow masses without damaging the fasteners and deforming the surface of the metal tile. For a meter of length of the structure, a force of up to 150 N.

    In addition, snow holders should be inconspicuous, few of the roof owners will like the protruding frames and huge grilles that spoil the appearance of the metal roof.

    Tubular snow holders for metal tiles

    Some of the simplest and most reliable designs. In terms of design and shape, the snow holders are two parallel horizontal pipes made of aluminum or galvanized steel, mounted on vertical brackets of the racks.

    Installation of a tubular snow retainer on a metal tile is performed at a distance of 60-70 cm from the edge of the coating. Due to the small vertical distance, the snow cutter is good at stopping dense snow masses and at the same time it easily allows rain and snow and melt water to pass through.

    Lattice snow holders for metal tiles

    Snow holders based on pipes withstand the load well, their stopping effect is not enough to retain a light loose mass, especially in a situation where the angle of inclination of the roof slope is quite large, the snow on the metal tile has not yet had time to be compressed and covered with an ice crust.

    If in a given area the snow cover is predominantly dry and loose, then it is best to put a grate on the pipes or choose a lattice snow guard made of polyaramide or aluminum alloy. Plastic snow cutters with a grid made of impact-resistant compounds are much more convenient and practical than steel structures:

    • No corrosion;
    • Snow holders are not afraid of temperature changes;
    • The strength of reinforced plastic is not inferior to metal.

    Important! It is known from practice that polyamide and polyaramide snow holders do not break the metal tile and do not strip off the polymer coating from the roof, which cannot be said about steel gratings.

    Snow cutters in the form of lattice barriers are more difficult to install, they often collect a lot of branches and leaves on the surface of the metal tile, so you periodically have to climb to the roof to clean the cells and remove debris.

    Corner snow holders for metal tiles

    When buying roofing, in nine cases out of ten, managers offer to buy corner snow cutters. It is generally accepted that a snow retention bar profiled in the form of a corner for metal tiles is better suited, has greater efficiency and high strength.

    In practice, corner snow guards work perfectly at any angles of inclination of the roof, they are not afraid of strong winds or icing of the surface. The corners can be positioned almost anywhere on the roof.

    But their effectiveness is limited. Already with a thickness of the snow cover of more than 15 cm, and if an ice crust has also appeared, then the flow of ice and snow simply overflows over the edge of the snow holder. In addition, the corner strips affect the redistribution of rainwater flows on the roof slopes. As long as the rain is light, water flows through the cracks onto the gutters without any problems.

    As soon as the amount of precipitation increases to an average level and above, the water does not have time to drain and goes down the snow holders, like along the gutters, towards the gables.

    Rope snow holders for metal tiles

    Structurally, yokes look like shortened corner snow cutters. The length of one snow-tow bar does not exceed 25 cm. Some of the owners of a house with a roof made of metal tiles are tired of watching water flood everything around in the rain instead of going down the drain, and he decided to divide one corner into several small ones.

    The idea turned out to be extremely successful:

    • The number of points for installing snow holders on the metal tile has increased, therefore, it is possible to more effectively "tie" the snow carpet on the roof without the risk of avalanche cracks;
    • The tow bars turned out to be less noticeable on the surface of the metal tile, if you do not look closely, you may not see the presence of snow cutters on the roof.

    The only drawback is the increased labor intensity of the installation. The installation of yokes, on average, takes three times more time and effort than ordinary corners.

    Arched snow cutters

    Horseshoe-shaped snow holders are considered to be the most unobtrusive. The height of the arc usually does not exceed 20 cm, the diameter of the rod is 15-20 mm. Therefore, in order to consider a dense row of snow holders on the profiled surface of the metal tile, you need to try very hard.

    The efficiency of a horseshoe is even higher than that of trellis and tubular structures, but the arcs are unable to trap wet snow, especially with rain and wind. Today, horseshoes are massively used on small roofs, as well as as an additional element, if suddenly the estimated number of snow holders turned out to be insufficiently effective, and an urgent need to save the situation.

    Calculation of snow holders for metal tiles

    There is a special technique that allows you to get the optimal value for the number of snow cutters and barriers on the roof. The calculation is performed according to the table below.

    First of all, guided by SNiP № 2.01.07-85, the number or category of the climatic zone in which the building is located is calculated, in this way the average precipitation rate for the region is taken into account.

    The second step is to measure the length of the metal tile slope and the angle of its inclination. After the step between the attachment points has been selected, the table determines the number of snow holders, in this case a tubular structure.

    What snow holders for metal tiles are better

    Any home owner would like the number of snow cutters and barriers installed on the roofing of metal tiles to be minimal. Firstly, it does not decorate the roof too much, and secondly, each additional hole in the metal significantly increases the risk of leaks and insulation sticking. Even if the bracket for the snow guard for the metal tile is installed on a silicone gasket seal.

    Over time, the lateral load from the pressure of massive snow layers deforms the mount and increases the likelihood of leakage. If you choose according to this criterion, then the best snow guards for metal tiles are tubular models.

    They have the least number of roofing drilling points. The bearing brackets have a sufficiently large supporting surface and a massive stiffener, therefore, it is much more difficult to move or tear off the gasket from the surface of the metal tile than in the case of arc or corner structures. In addition, these snowmobiles are easy to repair and maintain, and are easier and faster to install than tow bars or horseshoes.

    For roofs with small slope lengths the best option there will be corners or yoke.

    Important! If the barriers are made of high-quality steel, then if properly installed, they will last 20-25 years without repair and maintenance. Yoke made of Chinese metal decay on metal tiles in 4-5 years.

    If it is important for the owner of the house to preserve the original appearance of the metal tile, then arc snow cutters can also be installed. They are easily repaired and, if necessary, can be quickly replaced with new snow cutters without damaging the metal roofing.

    Features of mounting snow holders on metal tiles

    There are two main restrictions that must be strictly observed when installing snow cutters.

    First, it is necessary to correctly select the bottom line for the installation of the snow barrier. The support foot of the bracket or snow cutter fence should not go beyond the conventional Mauerlat line. At first glance, the easiest way is to put the snow holder on the roof overhang, but this cannot be done, since the snow pressure will lead to the appearance of a bending load, and a decent size will appear between the sheets of metal tile.

    The exception is corner structures, they can be placed at a distance of 25-30 cm from the eaves.

    The second condition is correct fastening. One of the options for the correct fastening is shown below.

    In this case, the snow retainer is made in the form of a fence, on which barrier gratings will be installed. The supporting frame has two points of support. The upper "paw" of each vertical post must be secured with a self-tapping screw with a gasket.

    Important! The top anchor point should be located in the cavity and directly attached to the sheathing bar.

    Thus, the upper "leg" of the snow holder takes all the load from the pressure of the snow on the separation from the surface of the metal tile. A massive layer of snow presses the roof against the lathing, so there is no deformation or lifting of the roof covering.

    If you put a lattice snow holder with the lower leg fastened on the sheathing bar, then the snow will simply overturn the barrier and tear the metal tile.

    How to install snow holders on metal tiles with your own hands

    The drag barriers are considered the easiest to install. A light sheet steel corner can be installed with little or no preparation.

    Installing the yoke and corner snow cutter

    Before starting work, choose the distance between the two lines of drag snow retention. Usually the size is taken equal to the step of the metal tile. For correct installation it is important to install each element strictly in a horizontal position, otherwise the load on the roof will turn out to be uneven.

    Initially, a pair of marking cords is pulled over the metal tile. This helps to navigate during installation, but still, each yoke is additionally leveled with a building level before screwing in the self-tapping screws. The elements are secured using silicone sealing washers.

    Corner snow holders are installed in a similar way. The only difference is the additional requirement for fixing the upper edge of the corner. As with the lattice posts, top row self-tapping screws must be wrapped in a roof lathing bar.

    Installation of a tubular snow guard

    If a tubular or lattice structure is chosen for snow protection, then the best solution would be to reinforce the battens in advance even before laying the metal roofing.

    To prevent the brackets from overturning the roof, two 15-20 cm wide boards are additionally laid along the line of the future snow protection. This will strengthen the base and at the same time simplify the fastening process, you will not be afraid to miss a self-tapping screw past the sheathing timber.

    For installation, a marking cord is pulled, along which the supporting brackets of the snow holders are attached. Usually, first of all, the upper row of self-tapping screws is tacked to the crate, then pipes are installed and fastened along the lower row of mounting holes.

    Conclusion

    It will not be difficult to put snow holders on the metal tile with your own hands. A small additional device will not only secure being under the roof overhangs, it is also an obligatory element. modern construction... If an avalanche has come down the cause of injury, then the damage will be incomparably greater than the purchase and installation of the corner.

    The snow that evenly covers the roof gradually melts as a result of the heat from the roof, after which it freezes from the cold air and turns into an ice mass. Falling snow and ice are dangerous for people below. To avoid the descent of the snow mass from the roof, as well as the fall of any objects, special structures are used, which are called snow holders.

    What are snow holders for a roof made of metal tiles for and what functions do they perform?

    The purpose of snow retention systems is reduced not only to ensuring the safety of passers-by under the roof of a particular structure: snow catchers reduce the likelihood of mechanical damage to the roofing material, avoid the appearance of small cracks and scratches on it, exclude bending and deformation of the roof under the influence of a heavy snow mass.

    Equipment with snow guards is of particular importance. metal roofs, which are made of metal, corrugated board, etc. In addition, snow pads must be installed on multi-level roofs, as well as under skylights. For the climate middle lane Russia, about 900 kg of snow mass can accumulate on one running meter of the protective structure.

    Snow holders help trap snow on the roof and prevent it from avalanching

    Snow retention systems can be different names, which is due to the performance of various functions by these devices:

    1. Snow barriers. They are designed to completely retain the snow layer on the roof. In this case, even a partial slip is unacceptable. As far as melting is concerned, it happens naturally.
    2. Snow cutters, the purpose of which is to cut the layer of snow into smaller pieces. As a result, the energy of the snow layer at the moment of falling will be much less than at the convergence of the mass as a whole. Thus, the safety of being under the roof is ensured.

    Calculating snow load

    To exclude damage to the roof structure during heavy rainfall, the necessary calculations are performed even at the stage of creating a roof project. The average weight of snow can be taken equal to 100 kg / m³, and for wet precipitation - 300 kg / m³. With these values, it is possible to calculate the snow load without any special difficulties. However, this indicator can be more accurately determined using a special regional map. It is taken as the basis for calculating design standards.

    Using a regional map, you can determine the thickness of the snow cover for a specific region

    The snow load is calculated by the formula S = S g * μ, where S is the snow pressure per 1 m² of the roof, S g is the standard value of the snow load for a particular region, μ is a coefficient that depends on the angle of inclination of the roof:

    • μ = 1 with a roof slope of less than 25˚;
    • μ = 0.7 if the roof has a slope of 25–60˚;
    • with a slope of more than 60˚, the snow load is not taken into account (μ = 0).

    Attention should be paid to the windward side of the house, although the snow level will be less there than on the leeward side.

    The windward side is the one from which the wind blows, the leeward side is the one from which it blows.

    The main types of snow-holding systems

    Roof rails that trap snow can be quite different. The difference lies in both shape, size and materials, as well as reliability. First of all, the choice of this or that design depends on the amount of snow that it should prevent.

    Tubular

    The system is made in the form of tubular elements that go into the holes of the holders with subsequent installation on the roof surface. The amount of snow that such a structure can withstand directly depends on the removal of elements from each other. In addition, the dimensions of the snow catcher play an important role, namely, the parameters of the pipe - length and diameter. The advantage of this design is the ability to increase the length and snow load by installing additional fasteners and pipes.

    The design of tubular snow holders allows you to increase their total length and, as a result, snow load by installing additional elements

    Today, when installing tubular snow retention systems, a galvanized structure, painted in the color of the roof, is often used, which is characterized by increased corrosion resistance.

    Lattice

    Lattice roof railing is similar in structure to a ladder laid on the edge and fixed across the roof. By analogy with tubular elements, they can also be easily strengthened or lengthened. Lattice and pipe structures are among the most reliable and versatile. They can be installed on roofs made of sheet roofing materials or natural tiles. Lattice snow catchers are distinguished by their efficiency due to the presence of snow melting holes and their high load-bearing capacity.

    Snow grates are highly efficient thanks to their mesh design

    Corner

    Corner protective structures equip those roofs, which are characterized by the accumulation of snow in small volumes, that is, covered with corrugated board or metal tiles. These elements are made of the same material as the roof. The installation of the system is carried out directly to the roof covering. The installation is carried out along the ridge, while the elements are arranged in rows in a checkerboard pattern. The gap between the rows should be 0.5–1 m. Corner snow catchers are not designed to hold snow in large volumes, so this design is not particularly durable. It is best to use them in regions with little snow.

    Corner snow guards are best used in areas with little snow.

    Yoke devices are mostly designed for additional snow retention. They are used in conjunction with lattice and tubular systems, as well as on roofs with a low angle of inclination, covered with soft materials. As a rule, snow lingers on the latter due to the rough surface. If the roof has a small angle of inclination, then the fall of the snow mass is unlikely. At the same time, in order to play it safe, point yokes are mounted in a checkerboard pattern with an interval of 50 cm from each other.

    Roof bars are installed on roofs with a low angle of inclination or covered with soft roofing materials

    It is also worth taking into account that the yokes are installed only during the installation of the roof. These elements are made in the form of a triangle and a long plate, which is located under the roofing material and is attached to the lathing. A soft material is laid on top, which hides the installation site. As a result, the roof is fully protected against possible leaks.

    Snow retention logs are rarely used. They can be found, for example, on wooden roofs. In this case, the logs are mounted on special hooks that are attached to the crate or to truss structure... The thicker the trunk of the tree, the more snow it can trap. Above the roof, the log is placed at a height of 2-3 cm. This ensures unhindered snow melt during melting. The rest of the snow mass lingers on the roof until it completely melts.

    The logs are mounted by means of special elements in the form of hooks that are attached to the lathing or rafter structure

    Installation of snow protection on metal tiles

    Installation of a snow retention system is not so much difficult as it requires attention and care, as well as compliance with certain rules.

    Rules for installing snow catchers for metal tiles

    For correct selection and installation of the structure, it is necessary to figure out how it is fixed on the roof of metal tiles. There are the following recommendations:

    1. The arrangement of tubular systems is carried out at the joints of the roof with the supporting element of the structure.
    2. It is unacceptable to install pipes to the eaves, otherwise there is a risk of deformation and destruction of the roofing system.
    3. Fastening pipes must be staggered or end-to-end.
    4. The first row of the snow retention system must be installed, 50 cm away from the edge of the roof.
    5. Longitudinal (tubular, lattice and corner) snow holders are installed in the cornice area, and point ones - along the roof slope.

    If the length of the roof slope exceeds 5.5 m, experts recommend installing snow collection systems in several rows, leaving a gap of 2-3 m between each of them.

    Snow guard device

    Snow retention systems trap accumulated snow and separate it into parts. In addition, there is no need to install elements around the entire roof perimeter. Installation is carried out in those places where in winter period a large mass of snow accumulates. It is also worth considering that modern snow retention systems are perfectly combined with the aesthetics of the roof and do not spoil it in any way, since they are usually matched exactly to the color of the topcoat. Thus, you can find the most suitable elements for almost any building. When installing roof fences at the stage of building a house and a roof, less financial and labor costs will be required.

    Fastening the snow guard to the metal tile

    After choosing the required type of snow holder, they begin to prepare tools and materials. Their list, regardless of the type of construction, will be almost the same:

    For cutting material, the use of a grinder is undesirable.... This is explained by the fact that snow retention systems are made of metal and coated with polymers. When cutting with a power tool, the coating melts and breaks, which subsequently leads to the formation of corrosion and a decrease in the strength of the structure.

    Fastening tubular systems

    Tubular snow catchers for metal roofing are supplied as a set, consisting of the following elements:

    Fastening of the snow retention structure is performed as follows:

    1. Install the brackets. To do this, stepping back 30 cm from the side cut of the roof, drill holes for mounting the first bracket, while its upper end should rest against the cut of the previous row of tiled form.
    2. Install waterproofing gaskets: on the upper hole 7 mm, on the bottom - 14 mm. This difference compensates for the difference in height that occurs due to the profile characteristic of the metal tile.

      Waterproofing gaskets allow you to compensate for the height difference due to the profile of the metal tile

    3. Mount the bracket.

      Mount the bracket in the holes made

    4. Having departed from the first element of 1100 mm, the second bracket is fixed in the same way.
    5. A pipe is threaded through the holes of the installed brackets. WITH the free end of the pipe should extend beyond the extreme fastening element by no more than 30 cm.

      Pipes are inserted into the holes of the brackets

    6. If it is necessary to lengthen the pipes, the elements are connected and fixed using self-tapping screws for metal.

      To lengthen the pipe, the elements are spliced together

    7. Pipe sections are sealed by flattening the ends or installing special plugs.

      The ends of the pipes are sealed with plugs or by flattening

    In the described way, the installation of lattice snow catchers is also carried out.

    Video: installing tubular snow holders

    Mounting the corner snow holder

    During fastening, corner snow holders are placed above the load-bearing wall, where the highest mechanical strength of the roof is ensured.

    In practice, the place of greatest strength corresponds, as a rule, to the second or third wave of metal tiles.

    The width of the corner to be mounted is equal to the length of one row of roofing material. The top edge of the snow retention element is the one from which a right angle to the roof surface is formed. Having completed the installation of the corner in a row of metal tiles, it is fastened with self-tapping screws. Most of the load will be applied to the top of the element, so for installation, use fasteners with a length of 50–70 mm. This size allows you to reliably fix the structure to the roof lathing. Shorter self-tapping screws are suitable for attaching the lower edge of the corner. This is explained by the fact that there are no high loads.

    When installing a corner snow holder, self-tapping screws of a greater length are used in the upper part, and a shorter one in the lower

    Installation of drag systems for snow retention

    Towel (point) snow holders are evenly distributed over the roof. Their location depends on the specific roof structure. The elements are fastened by means of self-tapping screws. The sheets of roofing material are not strong enough to support the towbars. Therefore, in those places where the point elements will be installed, wood bars are additionally placed.

    The installation of the bars compensates for the difference in height in the tile profile.

    The fastening part of the drag snow holders is located under the roofing material

    Total cost of work

    An important point in the arrangement of snow holders is the total cost of the work. It depends, as a rule, on the dimensions of the elements of the selected structure, as well as on the type of roof and the manufacturer. Since tubular snow catchers are the most popular, consider the cost of this particular design.

    A set of elements 3 m long with all the necessary fasteners will cost an average of 1100–5500 rubles. In fact, the installation of snow guards is not a very difficult process, so you can do it yourself. However, it should be borne in mind that improper installation of the elements can lead to both damage to the roof and other negative consequences.

    The cost of installing a snow retention system depends on the type of roof, size and cost of the structure itself

    If the work is carried out by specialists, then the installation of one snow guard will cost 2000–5000 rubles. This amount includes:

    • arrival at the site, drawing up a drawing, carrying out the necessary measurements;
    • purchase of components;
    • installation of the system.
